Re: Son of the Black Eye portraits

Howgarth. I was aiming for a slightly wild look, a bruiser rather than a thinker. Originally I was going for leather armour, but it didn't quite fit the character, so he got steel. His face is based on my own, but with a beard. It looks wierdly like my dad o_O I'm pleased with the northern alliance insignia, however.

I'll not be optimising the pics for the smaller versions, I'm afraid, since the larger ones are those planned for future use. The smaller ones will be obsoleted relatively soon.

This being (preliminarily) complete finishes the project. I'm going to be difficult to contact for a while regarding improvements anyway, since I'm working via thumb drive from a university computer...

Howgarth is pretty good, only the arm looks a bit short. See the attached image, in that position the elbow would be clearly lower. It would be possible to have the elbow higher, but it would require it being taken farther back. In that position the foreshortening of the arm sections would look different (the forearm would be pointing much more clearly away from the viewer) and that kind of position is not as relaxed and natural as the present one.

Also, the whites of the eyes look a bit too white. They don't emit light, therefore they follow the normal rules of shading: the shadow side eye should be darker, and the shadow side of the each eye should also be darker than the light side (the surface of the eye is spherical, remeber?)

I think I naffed up the foreshortening - the pose I picked wasn't quite right. I'll fix it it to be similar to the pose you provide. And I agree with your comment about luminous eyeballs, too. I need a slightly darker base colour. I don't usually shade my eyeballs to any great extent. perhaps I should do.

I'll come back with an updated version (hopefully) tomorrow.

Great job!

The human you recently drew sort of reminds me of a Spanish conquistador or something. That's not really a bad thing, it's just it resembles how they would look somewhat. It's actually what we're studying in my history class right now. xD

the glove's fingers look really great.

but in my (unqualified on portrait stuff) opinion, the face is a step backwards. i think you should do less but bolder lines, for kittyesque look.

I HAVE INTERNET BACK!!

Also, updated howgarth. Fixed the issues Groovy raised. Tried to sort out the face - i've seen how kitty does eyes, for instance, but I'm finding the effect tough to imitate. This will do for SotBE, if only to get it out of the way. Also added a couple more lines to the face, as he actually looked a little young.

Yep, I believe so. Adding Howgarth to the first page.

EDIT: just don't forget to put the big versions in resources =P

Or maybe a campaign bottle.

Good job.

Sorry to bring this up so late, but is Howgarth's armor a little thin in the collar & shoulders, as if it is a shirt?

Don't worry, I'm not stopping portraiting all together. In fact, I'm working on Girgistan's Slayer sketch at present.
