Re: Modern Combat

Post by PsychoticKittens »

well, I guess I can let out some info on the boats.

There are 6 Boats available.

Transport can carry up to 3 infantry/vehicles but have no combat ability

Destroyers are light boats with short range cannons.

Cruisers are light boats with anti-air and anti-sub capabilities, but are terrible against other boats.

Submarines are invisible in water, and more evasive than other boats. They do great damage to boats, but can't fight other units without upgrading to get Cruise Missiles.

Battleships are able to bombard enemies up to 6 Hexes away with their powerful cannons, but are vulnerable to attack.

and Aircraft Carriers are able to hold and protect up to 5 helicopters or aircraft, while healing them minorly. They have flak cannons and can be upgraded with ranged AA missiles for fighting aircraft.

Theres plenty of places where you'll see naval combat (for instance the area inbetween Africa and South America is a hotspot, as is Oceania/Australia). But most Naval Combat won't be in the early part of the game since boats are powerful and expencive units.

Note: Battleships and Aircraft Carriers are the only level 2 recruits in the era.

PK, what are the vehicles being used beyond boats? Any hints or details?

Land vehicles primarily, but aircraft would be nice to know as well.

Aircraft are probably the less complex of those two. I'd probly split it into three groups:

Theres 2 Helicopters. The least mobile group, they're unable to travel fast over water because of fuel consumption, and can't fly too speedily in forests or jungles either, because they fly low. They're best against infantry and vehicles, they don't do quite enough damage to fight boats, and other aircraft eat them up.

Transport Copters are able to carry 2 infantry, and have light machine guns

Choppers are armed with machineguns and rockets, they're pretty good at shooting down infantry because of their bullet resists, and cannons can't reach them very well, so they aren't too scared of tanks either.

The Next group is the Fighters. They're fast, and best against other aircraft, but they're also armed with bombs for doing some damage to ground and sea targets. All Fighters Have Skirmish.

Scout Fighters Are the fastest non-missile unit, moving up to 12 hexes in a turn. They're very evasive, and its hard to take them down without homing missiles or another fighter. They're only very lightly armed though, and can't dish out too much damage.

Fighters are pretty much heavily armed scout fighters, bigger missiles, bigger bombs, and able to take more punishment, but not quite as fast. Overall they're much better for fighting though.

Stealth Fighters are the second most expencive unit that doesn't kill itself when it hits something. They're nearly uncompromised by other air vehicles, and while frail they are invisible when not next to another unit.

The last, as you probly expected, are the bombers. There's only 2 of them.

Regular Bombers are probly known well enough by most people: A Bigger fighter, thats built specifically to blow stuff below them to teeeeny tiny bits. They're good at it too.

Stealth Bombers like stealth fighters are completely invisible everywhere they go.

Theres a rather large list of vehicles, and they're likely to be where alot of the combat and countering is gonna happen on land.

Jeeps are fast, lightly armed cars that can carry 1 infantry. They're not very good on rough terrain though.

APC are a hollowed out tank, with room to spare. They carry 2 infantry and have Heavy Machine Guns. They're mostly built to take damage from infantry, and most tanks or rockets will be able to tear them apart.

Light Tanks are armed with a cannon and a heavy mg, light tanks are the main land weapon for any front-line confrontation. They're not quite as fast as jeeps or apc, but they make up for it in firepower.

Heavy Tanks are just what it implies, big, slow, super tanks. The most expencive vehicle currently. They can take down most anything on tread, wheel, or feet. Just try not to get blown up by ranged weapons!

Artillery are able to shoot up to 3 hexes away with their powerful cannons to bombard enemy armor or infantry. Not the strongest ranged weapon you can get, but they make for decent backup.

Rocket Artillery are jeeps with podfulls of explosive rockets. Able to lob them distances of 5 hexes at Infantry, Vehicles, Boats, and Even Aircraft! They're one of the best ranged units in the game, but they're very fragile, and aren't too fast.

Missile Platforms similarly to rocket artillery, are jeeps armed with AA missiles. Recently though, these AA missiles were made viable to hit ground targets for minor damage also, making them a low powered Rocket unit, specialized for killing Planes and Helicopters. Unlike Flak, they take no retaliation because they fire from far away, and are very accurate. If they don't take down the target though, its very likely they will be destroyed.

Flak Cannons are the other anti-air weapon available. Not quite as accurate as Missile platforms, they make up for it with the ability to defend themselves, and huge damage. They're also armed with Mortar Cannons which can pummel infantry and vehicles with shrapnel.

Well, not everything will be 100% working by the beta, but it'll be playable.

I'm just interested to give it a go, 100% ready or not. I know the sheer magnitude of the project means it will be a while before everything is complete anyways.

most of the era itself is done, albeit Golbeeze hasn't started his balancing runs. I've been nagging him to start on that. The hopeful thing is that because this is so large, and likely long lasting and slow game that requires you to think, it'll be one that noobs won't enjoy, and thusly won't play. Allowing for players who enjoy taking their time, thinking, and enjoying the game to spend their time with other people like them.

I'll admit its huge, but the basic layout is pretty close. After this is mostly aesthetics and additions that aren't open to public knowledge quite yet :P .

In future, if you double post accidentally, you can simply delete the extra yourself, as long as noone has replied after you.

The delete post option is available on your most recent post as long as no one has replied. So if you post twice, delete the most recent and then edit your previous post. You have it, I know you do.
