Ok, here's to calling the kettle black. It shouldn't be. Try making it a lighter shade of gray. This will allow you to create a more 3d feel by using different shades. The kettle will still look black, it just will now also not look flat.

I see no reason why you can't have the best of both worlds. Choose a random starting point at start up, but allow the player to move forward and backward.
