Are you aware that paypal can, at their whim, freeze your account and all assets with it? It happened to me for my website, Yiffy.NET.

I HIGHLY recommend amazon honor system instead. It doesn't make you sign up for an account (big plus), it only charges you $0.30 + 2.9%, deposits are made directly to your checking account automatically (no having to 'download' your money to your checking account like paypal) and everyone trusts amazon (which can't be said for paypal.)

More information on amazon :D : http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/subst/ ... 73-6050345

More information on how to get screwed by paypal :x :
http://www.paypalsucks.com (Read the story about the guy who ordered a laptop off of ebay and got a cinder block shipped to him, paypal approved it as just 'not as advertised' rather than fraud and refused to reverse the transaction)

I don't think that Paypal is likely to do that anymore, considering a class action lawsuit was launched against them, and it is likely they will be paying out millions.

You can try to join the class and claim compensation from them if you feel you were unfairly treated.

I'm donating something wesnoth players can enjoy.

Post by guest »

Love the convenience of all of wesnoth in a single tarball, but cringe at the size?
Slightly banwidth challenged?
Fortunately, you can update wesnoth source for a fraction of the full download.

Do you buy a whole new car
when your current car only requires new tires?
Do you download a new 36 megabyte .tar.gz
when all you need is a 1 megabyte patch?

There is an easy solution for upgrading source tarballs.
It's easier than recycling beer bottles.
You get all the great wesnoth taste for less calories than wesnoth-lite.

wesnoth-0.9.0.tar-wesnoth-0.9.1.tar.sd.7z
is a 1.2 megabyte compressed patch for
upgrading from wesnoth-0.9.0.tar to wesnoth-0.9.1.tar.
It saves 96.8% or 35.1M over downloading 36.3M wesnoth-0.9.1.tar.gz

The Public Patch Repository can also make patches, on demand,
for perhaps the previous 3 versions of wesnoth to current,
if it can find where to download the old wesnoth tarballs.

It may take a moment to install the programs required
to apply patch files: bash, bzip2, curl, openssl, p7zip, sdelta.
But probably half of them are already installed.
After you are ready to run the client you can request, download,
and apply patches for almost all your source tarball upgrades.
And you can enjoy 10 times the speed with 1/10th the download of before.
Visit http://ibiblio.org/sdelta to get started.

Before you start download free tiny patches you may want a
peak at the savings the Public Patch Repository is providing.
Statistics about recently generated patches and savings are at
http://ibiblio.org/sdelta/recent.html

If wesnoth .tar.gz was not as large as a linux 2.6 .tar.bz2
then I probably would not have mentioned the patches.
But if you download patches instead of full source tarballs
then everyone saves money on bandwidth: those who pay
for http://www.wesnoth.org, sourceforge, and your ISP.
That donation is almost as good as putting money
back into their pockets, yes?

For people who are building from source anyway, using cvs to
get updates is another option. I keep two local copies now, one
that has the latest source and another that tracks the latest
release. I use the current cvs when playing solo and the latest
stable when playing with other people remotely.

I have scripts that update either of these by cd'ing to
the source directory and running one command. The stable
release version uses cvs status to get the latest tag and then I
update to that tag.

Dave,

You may be able to open a reseller account with online stores like Amazon. Then have one page with all the links to the stores that people can click on in order for you to get a percentage of the sale. It is an easy way to get some money and there is no extra drain on Wesnothian pockets, at least not directly.

I've recently discovered Wesnoth, and I'm very impressed. This is a very engaging, challenging game you all have put together! I think the thing that hooks me is leveling up those mages. (Someday I hope to be hardcore enough to lose a white mage without reloading from my last save point.)

My first idea to reward you was to buy a beer (or non-alcoholic beverage of your choice) for everyone who has contributed, but I searched for "donate" on the website and this was the thread that I found.

So cheers! Here's to you. And thanks.

How much are the current hosting and bandwidth costs?

I have a server hosted at USLec (near Philadelphia, PA, U.S.) with about 10 Mbit/s of unused bandwidth that my company gives me to use at my discretion. I could host a mirror or anything else Wesnoth related on that server.

I just finished playing my first game and came here looking for a way to donate (and found it).

This is the only game of its kind on the Mac. Thanks to you all for supporting multiple platforms. I have no skills that you would find useful to the project, but I can certainly pay for what I use.

Again, thank you.

I'll second the anti-PayPal sentiment. I have lost money to/through them in just about every way imaginable. Refused chargebacks, fradulent chargebacks, frozen accounts, etc. I have stopped using them seriously, having simple throwaway accounts that I never keep more than a dollar in. I would seriously suggest an alternative.

PS: Google is going to wipe paypal off the map when their micropayment system comes online.

Maybe donating people could be given a special rank on the forums? This will attract more people to donate, and is nice for the ones that did.
