That's cool and scary! Sorry I have nothing cool to say, but I just wanted to tell I like it.
Check out my sprites!

Re: thespaceinvader sprites: current, animals
Nice! Looking forward to the shaded version
Though, something strikes me as odd about the way its legs are positioned, especially on this side of the body--I feel like they should be spaced out a little more, say, have the two middle ones sticking out a little farther
(I'd post an image to show what I mean, but I'm not on my computer ATM)
Anyway, looks great, as always!

I know what you mean. The legs are going to get some significant revision. It's going to be a challenge rendering them so it's clear they're separate.

Very cool cave spider. Though as a level 3 it should probably be a bit beefier, more like a tarantula.
This would be a great lvl 2 spider though.

The old one, for comparison.
Maybe it could stand to be a touch larger, yeah...

Re: thespaceinvader sprites: current, animals
Actually, what if you emphasized the scariness of it having loads of really long (but thin!) legs and a huge, slobbery, hairy, bloated, disgusting body? I hate to say it, but the old image always reminds me more of a plush toy than of an Arachnophobe's worst nightmare...

That's why it's getting replaced =)
It's been on the list for a while.

Re: thespaceinvader sprites: current, animals
For the spider, I would suggest using jumping spiders (family Salticidae) as the basic model. They are active hunters, stalking their prey and jumping on it, behaviour which fits nicely for cave spiders too. Their body shape reflects their behaviour, with shortish, muscular legs and compact overall shape. They also have a big, square-fronted carapace (head) with four of their eyes being large and facing forward. In other words, they have a good face for sprite representation. Look for images of them that are already in Wesnoth perspective, so it's easier to get the leg positioning to look good (remember that pictures of them on vertical surfaces can be rotated to make it look like they are on the ground).

Re: thespaceinvader sprites: current, animals
Spider fangs don't look like what you drew. On a spider, you will see two large appendages (chelicerae) hanging straight down over their mouths. The fangs unfold from under the chelicerae when they bite. You can see that in most of the images Sgt. Groovy linked to.
