[Complete] The Grand Tag! 2v2 Tournament - 4th edition

Post by Dunno »

Two years have passed since the last edition of the most brutal Wesnoth tournament, the one and only, the glorious, The Grand Tag!
Also, twenty years have passed since Id Software has redefined computer gaming with the release of Doom.
And finally, this year we're having a fourth edition of The Grand Tag!: Hell vs. Earth.

*crowd cheering in the background*

The hellish demons shall clash with brave marines, but first both sides will choose its champion. And only then, two brave heroes and two unholy beasts will meet in an epic 2v2 duel. 16 teams enter, only one remains. Will it be you? Will you become the new TGT Champion? Join now and test your might against the best of the best in this one of a kind tournament!
I also have a strong feeling that some legendary ghosts from the past may appear in this tournament to face the fresh blood warriors, so stay tuned!

[size=200]Rules[/size]
As it's already the 4th edition of the TGT, I'm sure most of you already know the basics, just for the safe side I will copy the rules from last years and emphasise the few things that will be different this year ;)

(Checking out the TGT 3nd Edition is certainly worth it if you are not familiar with the TGT as there is the full set of rules, a lot of funny things, action packed replay packs and it is perfect to get the general athmosphere of the tourney. The thread is found here: http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=34519 )

1. So what is the TGT? :)

(based on last year rules and putting important changes into italics)

- The GRAND TAG! is a wesnoth default era & settings (except Time of Day) 2vs2 tournament. this edition is meant to be played by 16 teams, grouped in 2 groups (Hell and Earth)
- tournament is meant to be played on the latest stable wesnoth version
- check out The GRAND TAG! 3rd Edition thread to learn more about the tournament

2. When it will begin?
- The GRAND TAG! will begin after the recruitment phase - that is since closing the team list (most likely beginning of September)

3. What are the general rules of the tournament?
- GENERAL RULE: have fun, respect other players & their time
- tournament will be played with the following tournament elimination system:

- after team list will get closed, 2 groups of 8 teams will be made by the admins and posted on the thread.
- winners of the Hell Group will fight against winners of the Earth Group for the "Champions" title of this edition of TGT!
- match for a 3rd place is possible if both teams that will lose with the finale players will agree to play for it
- tournament is meant to be played on the newest stable version of the game, with default xp and map settings
- each team plays up to 3 matches in the round, winner of the 2 of 2 OR 2 of 3 is the winner of the round and goes to the next round with losing team eliminated from the GRAND TAG
- team cannot play using the same ip. adress
- subbing one teammate by the other during the game in run is NOT ALLOWED unless opponents will agree on it. Player that is subbed cannot spy enemy team and has to regain control over his troops ASAP
- teams are FIXED, but IT'S POSSIBLE to get 1 substitute player if it's necessary to play out the round, altough in the finale games, substitutions are not allowed

3a. Maintaining the game flow
In previous editions of TGT some have complained about long rounds killing the tournament. The following rules are supposed to fix it, and are still open to discussion.
- The first round must be finished in 3 weeks (+1 organisation week for setting up dates), the second and third in 3 weeks and the grand finale in however time it takes. Please respect the time of your opponents and admins!
- At the beginning of every week (including the first week of round 1, the one after the organisation week), I'll send pms to every team that hasn't played a single match in the current round and has no matches in schedule and see what's the problem. A team that doesn't respond in 72 hours gets disqualified.
- Each team has a right to one reschedule per round and one warning per tournament.
-- Reschedule: postponing a match at least 4h before its original starting time.
-- Warning: these are given when a team doesn't show up at all or postpones a match sooner than 4h before its original starting time.
- After receiving a second warning the team is disqualified. If the second warning occurred early enough, a team from the reserve list may come in the free spot. I hope there won't be many cases like this, so I'll just negotiate the terms individually.
- both sides can continue the match another day if all players will agree to do that and if there's still time for that in the round. However, if you know you have limited time, it is in your best interest to mention this when setting a game with your opponents or you might be forced to resign.
- round period may be shortened if all the tournament players will agree on it.
- there will be a number of referees around who will check if games have correct settings and see if everything is alright.

3b. Spectator's savoir vivre
I remember seeing numerous annoying spectators in the last edition so let's just state the obvious here:
- it is OK to:
-- welcome other players in the public chat
-- do small off-topic chat with current players in the public chat
-- comment on the game in the spectator-only chat
-- talk off-topic in the spectator-only chat
-- talk in any language in the spectator-only chat
- It is NOT OK to:
-- comment on the game in the public chat
-- have long, off-topic conversations in the public chat
-- talk in other languages than English in the public chat
-- swear, curse and use any form of discrimination in any chat.
- Spectators not following these rules will be kicked out, and depending on what's been done a further action may take place (maybe even a ban, so watch your language)

4.What are the timer settings?
- 300s starting timer, 360s reservoir, 300s turn bonus, no action bonus

5. What are the rules about the maps & factions?
- everybody has to play RANDOM FACTION
- Time of Day has to be FIXED, so don't forget to turn off "Random Start Time" option. It's for sake of map balance.
- map for the first game of the round has to be chosen with mutual acceptation of the both teams, P1 team in the the 1st game of every round will be chosen via computer program that will randomize it
- map for the second game is chosen by the team that lost the first game, this team will also decide who will play as P1 team
- map for the third game is chosen by the winners of the first game, this team will also decide who will play as P1 team
- players may chose to play the tournament games from the following default maps:

1st Round maps:
4p Clash
4p Hamlets
4p Loris River
4p Paths of Daggers
4p Xanthe Chaos
4p Underworld
4p Ruins of the Terra-Dwelve

4p Castle Hopping Isle*

2nd Round maps:
4p Clash
4p Loris River
4p Path of Daggers
4p Xanthe Chaos
4p Underworld

4p Castle Hopping Isle
4p Ruins of the Terra-Dwelve
*

3rd Round maps:
4p Clash
4p Loris River
4p Xanthe Chaos
4p Path of Daggers
4p Ruins of the Terra-Dwelve*

FINAL ROUND maps:
4p Clash
4p Loris River
4p Xanthe Chaos
4p Ruins of the Terra-Dwelve*

*Important edit: Maps in italics are allowed to be played, but only if both teams agree to play on them.
Ministry of Wesnoth warns you: Some matchups on these maps may lead to painful death ;)
Terra-Dwelve may be played without the opponents' agreement in the first round.
Since last time this rule started a flamewar-ish discussion, read first, comment later.

- modifications & old versions of the maps are NOT ALLOWED.

6. Rules regarding matches & forum
- teams are obliged to inform when they will play the game in this topic and allow observers to join their games. Games played in the tournament system have to have a "TGT" acronym, number of the game, number of the round & team that participate in their names!
- results with attached replay can be posted either by the winner or the loser with results and comments hidden in a spoiler tag.

7. Cheating & rules abusing
- cheating is not allowed, cheating teams will be banned from the tournament. For one million years dungeon!
- rules are never perfect, thus bona fides (good will) should be visible in team behaviour, if the team will find some part of the rules not precise, malignant behaviour will be punished by official warning. If the team will still act in malignant way, it can be banned.

8. Registration phase & Organisation Week
- Registration Phase starts 30th of July, 2013, you can join the tournament sending me a PM with your team name, your partner's name and you timezones. Registration message MUST have full nicknames of the players that will play in the team, it's forbidden to send a registration messages with only 1 player listed in them. Both players have to be registered on the boards to secure fluent communication between the teams! Because number of places in the tournament is limited, time of sending the recruitment message decides.
- this tournament WILL require small part of your time, so please be sure that you will have enough of the free time to participate without causing major problems to the other tournament players & host
- reservation: if you want to play the tournament, but you don't have the teammate yet/you're unsure if your team mate will want to participate, please post in this thread OR PM me, that you're interested in joining & post in this thread - other players might be in the same situation as you're, this will also reserve you a spot in the tournament for 72 hours period.
- after Registration Phase will end (that is after filling all 16 team spots), Organisation Week will begin.
- Organisation Week is, basically, a preparation phase of the tournament, during Organisation Week teams are supposed to contact their 1st Round opponents, set games for the 1st Round of TGT!, learn TGT! tournament rules and train; Organisation Week is necessary to secure fluid start of the tournament rounds.

9. When we can start playing the games?
- after closing the team list, end of the Organisation Week & official announcement about beginning of the round 1 of the tournament. I (as the host of the tournament) will announce such things

10.Bugs solutions:
a)Movement points bug
- once in a while, when one of the players drops from the game due to technical problems & rejoins, may find out that all his units have 0 movement points, it's very serious bug regarding tournament rules, thus following procedure has to be applied when it happens:

Disconnection bug HOWTO:
tiboloid wrote:1. save the game
2. open another Wesnoth client and load saved game as a replay (check the "Show replay" checkbox at the bottom of the Load Game dialog box)
3. check the "Skip animation" check box at the top of the screen
4. run the replay by clicking on "continuous replay"
5. when you reach the turn of the side before the disconnected guy, click on "pause at the end of turn"
6. save the game and reload.
b)Corrupted replays from reloaded games
- It's a well known fact, that replays from reloaded games are usually corrupted and can't be watched. This problem hits particularly a high level games that tend to be long, thus probability of saving & reloading the game is higher in their case. Still, such a corrupted replay can be repaired:

repairing reloaded games corrupted replays HOWTO:
alpha1 wrote: From what I’ve figured, the corrupted replay bug is caused by the fact that the after-reload game information is stored in the beginning of the replay file and that wesnoth client fails to recognize that the pre-reload info (which is stored in the end of the replay) must be read first. So in order to fix the replay, those two parts must be brought into the correct order.

1. Extract the replay file from the .gz archive
2. Open it in a text editor (I used Microsoft Word 2007). There will be 2 pairs of [replay] [/replay] –tags. (The after-reload game info between the first pair, the pre-reload between the 2nd)
3. Search for the 2nd [replay]-tag, cut everything between the [replay][/replay]-tags and paste it into the beginning of the file (don’t forget to delete those tags afterwards)
4. Search for the [replay_start]-tags (there will be 2 tags if you reloaded once) and delete everything between 1st and 2nd [replay_start]-tags. (If I understand correctly, that is the game info of the after-reload) This way wesnoth client will not be confused by it and will use the game info of the pre-reload part instead
5. Add the edited version of replay into the .gz archive (you may need to download 7-zip, a freeware archive program, in order to edit .gz archives, which can be find here http://www.7-zip.org/)
6. Have fun

Enjoy !
- ALL players have to USE AUTOSAVE, if rehost from replay-save somehow won't help, use last available autosave & accept different outcome.

11.Other cases not included in the rules
- anything not forbidden by the rules is permitted by mutual agreement.
- other cases not included in the rules & rules breaches will be decided by me, I want to play the tournament too so I urge other players to save replays from the games, post them here and observe other players' games to secure maximum level of fairness in this tournament. I also promise that I will make a decisions in the best interest of every player of the tournament - if my team will need some form of GM decision, I will cede my tournament host rights to the other team to get a fair judgement.

SO these are the general rules, in case you have any reasonable question concerning them, feel free to PM me or post on this thread.

Now to the changes not involved in the rules above. For the sake of higher attractivity of games, we have decided to reserve 8 slots to the teams who advanced from 1st round of the TGT in the past. This will enable us to see more top play games. This reservation period will take 2 weeks and after that, all the slots that remain empty - if some team doesn't want to or can't participate- will become open for any other players.
The reserved teams - if they participate- will also be put into the bracket fixedly to avoid them clashing in round 1.

The TGT! is really hard to manage from the admins side and it requires quite a lot of effort from us. So I would like to appeal to all players to:

a) consider their time restrictions before signing up - getting 4 players to play at the same time isnt always easy, especially if some of them have really limited time options
b) be active while setting the game date - from past experience we know its always important to set the date as soon as possible to have a reserve in case of some unexpected situation
c) be tolerant to one another, to the admins, respect the rules and the admin decisions - not everything can be treated in the general rules, so in those cases, the admin decision is final. We promise to be unsided :eng:

Ok, let's get this thing rolling!
The registration phase is now open! Remember that 8 slots are reserved for last editions veterans (those who have made it past the 1st round). Those slots will become open on the 18th of August. The registration phase will end on the 1st of September. It is not a fixed date, however, and may change if something goes wrong. Please read the rules first (especially those in italics), and then send me a pm in this format:

Code: Select all

Team name:
Teammate's name:
Team avatar:
My timezone:
My teammate's timezone:
Remember that names have to be the same on the forum AND on the server! If you use different names, please include that information in your pm.
If your teammate's timezone is the same as yours, you can leave the last space blank.
Team avatar is a lvl0-lvl1 unit from mainline that will be used for opening ceremony(ies)

Good work Dunno!

Any chance we can get a Message of the Day on the MP server? I've put up a message game for the moment.

There will be a Nerds 2.0 when I find a teammate. :D

Check again

Spaghetti Bolognese will try its luck once more, maybe this time we won't have to fight last edition vice-champions in the first round :augh:

Welcome back, neki!

I've set up an irc channel on freenode, #wesnoth-tgt. If anyone has something urgent or just want to see the news (I'll update the topic with upcoming games, events, etc), hop in. Also, I've never opped an irc channel so help is appreciated. And in the meantime, I'll experiment with bots using this channel, for educational purposes :P

Thank you Dunno for organizing another TGT tournament.
I've got some comments on the rules:
Dunno wrote: The first round must be finished in 3 weeks, the second and third in 2 weeks and the grand finale in 1 week
Seems counterintuitive to me to have first round last longer than the finals. The higher the level of play the longer games usually last. You can expect a single game of the finals to be played in the course of at least 3 sessions. One week seems very short for possibly three games (always having in mind the problem of matching four schedules).
Dunno wrote: both sides can continue the match another day if all players will agree to do that and if there's still time for that in the round.
Assuming bona fides this shouldn't be a problem, but it shouldn't be possible to force victory if the opponents time is up. Maybe you can expect players to be playing for a certain amount of time (maybe 2 hours), and if someone doesn't have enough free time for that, it has to be announced beforehand.
Dunno wrote: At the beginning of every week (including the first week of round 1, the one after the organisation week), I'll send pms to every team that hasn't played a single match in the current round and has no matches in schedule and see what's the problem. A team that doesn't respond in 72 hours gets disqualified.
This one is a bit unclear to me. What exactly does it mean for a team to respond? How much time to schedule games do players have from knowing their next round opponents to the beginning of that particular week?

And before I forget it, let me get to the point of this post, the registration of a team.
team name: Tentacles of the Deep
players: nani & peace
(current) timezone: GMT +2

Lets have a peaceful tournament :)

Well it's because I've heard complaints about how long the last rounds take and that it creates an absurd situation in which more spectators watch first round games than the finale. I'm starting to fear there's no good solution for this... Maybe something like "First 2 games must be played in the first week, and the tie breaker can be played in the 2nd week"?

Well, that's a good idea, you can never be too safe :)

Just respond, to see if the team is even still here. Say why aren't they playing and if they tried contacting their opponents. This is to see which team's fault it is that no matches have been played in a given pair, and to give the reserve list more chances for play. And first pms will be sent after the end of the organisation week, so a whole week after building a full tournament table and knowing your opponents. If a team doesn't schedule a match for a whole week and doesn't respond to my pm for 72 hours I think I can assume they're no longer following the tournament. Hope I cleared it up a bit :hmm:

Hi everyone :),

I would love to participate in this tournament, but I don't have a teammate yet.
So, people who wanna play with me as team-mate, please pm and let me know.

I read someone is looking for 'Nerds'? :) :)

I would prefer to team up with someone I know or have played with before.

Thanks and regards,

I'm afraid the finals taking so long is a result of long games played by four people with lives. I checked the TGT3 thread and there are announcements for 6 sessions in the finals. We took 3 weeks to play those and iirc we tried to get through asap. What's your plan if the finalists don't manage to finish their games in the period given by the rules? Will you try to find the team to blame and decide the tournament by disqualification? Or will you let them take the time they need and just ignore this rule, leaving me wondering why it has been made that way in first place?

This problem may actually arise in any round, and if teams are actually trying to finish their three 50 turn games as quickly as possible you'd probably have to bend those rules. But one week for the finals just seems utopian to me and one week for the first two games is very tight (though managable if one game happens to be short). Who knows maybe this time finals are going to be decided by two 10 turn games

Sorry, it seems I have been unclear myself. I was actually curious about the rounds after the first one. And I guess only one team member has to reply. If I'm without internet for a few days sometimes, I promise it won't mean I'm not interested in the tournament anymore

Forgive me if I'm too fussy about the rules. I just want to make sure I understand them to avoid being accused of cheating.

Nice you took the reins yourself.
Concerning the rules, peace is taking the words right out of my mouth.
I hope that my 1-2 week vacation in September will not lead to us being kicked out of the tourney due to breaching a rule,
in consideration of the possible fact that our opponents would have accepted such a suspension.
Apart from that I am glad the tourney has been brought back to life.
Good luck with its administration!
