Possible copyright problem

Post by ken-sama »

Dear Wesnoth fanbase,

The following game: https://www.fanatical.com/en/bundle/talisman-bundle features at least one video that uses an actual Wesnoth-music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSPko5lX6EI (I can't remember its title). I am not sure if this is a copyright problem or not, I'm not GPL-literate, just informing you about it.

This is my very first post here, so excuse me if I did not follow some kind of rules.

First things first: https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-violation.html

Thanks for telling someone. I'm not a stickler for these things so much as I dislike people undeservedly riding the creative efforts of others.

Their webpage is not portable with my chosen webbrowser, so I can't see anything there.

Product creators and distributors can require payment for purchase and initial distribution of software released in accordance with the GPL and similar licenses.

GPL applies only to program code.
You'd need to look at the terms on which that music was originally released to see if this Talisman Bundle violates any of those terms. Those terms are probably Creative Commons.

If this music is only used in that promotional advertisement, and not in the game itself, then the problem is that they don't attach that acknowlegement there on YouTube.
Again, someone would need to refer to the terms of the music and, if necessary, submit a complaint to YouTube. From my understanding, they are usually rather swift to yank videos if they receive substantiated reports like that.

I hope this was helpful.

A google search suggests that Mattias Westlund was the one who wrote the tracks for that game. He's also the one who wrote many tracks for Wesnoth, so it should not be a problem (including the ones that you're hearing in that link, like Breaking the Chains, etc.).
