FOSS games, what else is out there?

Post by doofus-01 »

I was stumbling around the internet (COVID-19, enough said), and came across this:
https://itsfoss.com/free-linux-games/
Apparently, Wesnoth is only 23/31, by some guy's measure. :?

This article: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020/03/ ... ike-games/ is part of what kicked off my wandering. I don't know anything about "rogue-like" games, but some of that reminded me of Legend of Zelda, and it was also a good reminder of just how "retro" Wesnoth is.

Does anyone have a recommendation for an active FOSS game? Old-school is cool, though Dwarf Fortress is a bit too old-school for me.

I haven't played it but I heard Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (DCSS) is popular.

I remember looking at Flare a while back. I'll have to learn how to use Blender ... sounds like a project, thanks.

EDIT: DCSS also looks interesting, in a less ambitious way, thanks for that as well.

http://retux.nongnu.org/ -Retux a great platformer (easier than supertux)
https://sourceforge.net/projects/apz/ (adventures on planet Zephulor, I haven't played in a while, but I have fond memories, I just wish someone would polish it.
www.wograld.org - alright, I'll admit this is my project, but its a pretty great multi-player rpg
http://www.freedroid.org/ - a good single player rpg with robots
https://ryzom.com/ - MMORPG - beautiful 3d game with unique crafting and gathering system.
https://www.themanaworld.org/ - MMORPG, I'll admit it was actually pretty awful the last time I played it, but that was years ago.
https://arianne-project.org/game/stendhal.html - MMORPG, actually pretty decent for what it is. Last I played it I found the loot a bit boring though, and it was kind of hard to find where to go next.

Wograld - our graphics requirements are less demanding.

I would not put too much emphasis on that.

It is actually more surprising to see wesnoth is still around! :-)

So many other open source games vanished over the years ... some of
which I miss. I think one thing that really keeps interest in wesnoth alive
AFTER the newbie stage, are the campaigns. The creativity through
campaigns should definitely be maintained!

Dwarf Corp
(Though only the engine is FOSS, like Frogatto & Friends you have to buy the game assets.

Similarly, the classic Marathon Trilogy was released as open source engine plus freeware assets (so playable free out of the box). Same goes for Tyrian.

Eh, that's an old DOS game I have. Mostly an arcade game with too little strategy to keep me interested for long.

As for "FOSS" I've got Widelands, Nethack, Moria and VMS Empire installed. Not a lot of good stuff out there otherwise IMHO.

Addendum: At the time I posted this I thought it _was_ the DOS game but I've since found the remake exists. Just to clarify...

My original post was really a capsule in time. It was right after we got the "shelter in place" order from the county government - really needed a low-cost distraction. I did start a Flare mod, but didn't get very far with it, as my forced "staycation" didn't last very long.

But these links are great. It's a thin field out there, but not a total desert.

Talk about a coincidence! Remnants is based on Master of Orion and this last week I've been going nuts playing a new patch of the original MOO that fixed a few bugs that it had. In fact I've already heard of RotP. And a couple others since there are in fact more than one MOO inspired new projects. : )

I tried Freeciv (oh my gosh) about 20 years ago. Hard to believe the open version of Civ is itself 2 decades old!! Coincidentally I was playing Civ (1) a couple weeks back before I got back into MOO.

The other 2 I had a quick look at and I notice they are both real time games. I'm a dedicated turn based game guy (one of BfW's best features to me) since I don't like to be rushed. (My spirit animal may just be the Sloth ;)

Yeah, it does look like a thin field once you eliminate all the dead projects and the engine rebuilds of older games (which require the original non-FOSS game assets to be playable).

In case anyone ever wants to sort through it all, I think this list is fairly complete: https://trilarion.github.io/opensourceg ... index.html
And this one associates classic titles with their FOSS clones (good for retro gamers): https://trilarion.github.io/opensourceg ... index.html

It is funny how addictive the old style 4x games are. I self regulate my access to them to safeguard my time. :o
