Here's a test that you can probably do: Unzip the save file, and open it in a text editor. Do a find-and-replace, replacing "new_animation" with "new_animationxx" – that should disable all the custom animations. Then load the save file and see if the problem still happens. EDIT: ...

Thanks for the details. EoHS does have a script that runs when a unit is selected, but it doesn't make a difference whether that unit is the leader. So this probably is NOT just an EoHS script taking too much time, which makes it harder to debug. Unfortunately, I think this must be an animation issu...
