once the error message shows up - can you check the contents of the wesnoth folder in the program files directory to see if anything has been installed at all? some policies (e.g. on a company machine) might cause such issues. there's an installer option "install... just for me" that picks...

In the main menu when opening the application, I can no longer use the shortcut key to load games (Command-o). I must instead click the load button. if you happen to have 7z installed - it can extract all files from the installer to a directory (right click context menu) - does this work?
600mb free space might be quite close. not sure, but the installer might create temp files, etc...
