Re: Galactic Empires (Wesnoth in Space)

OK, tried a standard run against 1 AI on Beta Quadrant, with all default settings. I played Humans, as usual, and randomly matched against the Ildari. Winning was trivially easy for me. I built a couple of interceptors to fight off the Ildari's starting ships, which mostly wasn't even necessary, bec...

Re: Galactic Empires (Wesnoth in Space)

Nobody: I enjoyed your post on a Wesnoth add-on, but I was skeptical of the details of some of your points. Absolutely nobody: I mean, how can we be sure you're right about the balance between bombers and planets unless you throw in a ton of math? Literally nobody: C'mon, do some arithmetic for us! ...

Re: Galactic Empires (Wesnoth in Space)

Thanks for the latest improvements! Really enjoying the new AI, and agree that the balance seems overall better now. I played the FFA map but ordered the two AIs to team up against me; I dropped my village income to 0 and gave the AIs 125 starting gold and +7 income each. It was moderately challengi...

Re: Cities of the Frontier - now for BfW 1.11

OK, well, you can get more iron by sending a Peasant Worker to a hill and ordering them to flatten it, or by sending a Peasant Worker to a mountain and ordering them to build a mine. The Dwarves may also be able to help you with iron, if you can find them.

Re: Galactic Empires (Wesnoth in Space)

Another of your THS mechanics that might really help the space-planet interplay is to have the planetary defense missile/laser/shield bases exist as planetside terrain tiles that have to be occupied by scientists to function. So the more missile bases that have scientists on them, the more firepowe...

Re: Galactic Empires (Wesnoth in Space)

Maybe the solution is to make invasions more effective? This is something I have been aiming for anyway. Some ideas: a) damaged HQs are unable to produce citizens, thus preventing new soldiers suddenly turning up in the middle of an invasion, b) lower HQ hitpoints from 40 to 30, just to make it eas...

Re: Galactic Empires (Wesnoth in Space)

On an unrelated topic, I notice that I usually feel pretty safe hanging out around enemy planets -- even if they have defensive measures installed, those only affect me if I choose to attack the planet. Even if there are defensive measures, they don't do much damage to a Level 2 or 3 heavy cruiser; ...

Re: Galactic Empires (Wesnoth in Space)

One more thought on balance, about the Vendeeni -- they don't seem to have a reasonable way of doing heavy damage to enemy HQs. The Iildari Trooper does decent damage using heat, and can upgrade to the electric attacks of the Iildari Exterminator, which are brutal against HQs. The Terran Soldier doe...

Re: Galactic Empires (Wesnoth in Space)

Last night I finished a full survival scenario on Normal, with Terrans, Iildari, and Vendeeni. I had fun, and the map is well-balanced, but the 'survival' elements felt pretty light to me compared to A New Land. I mostly felt like I was playing a generic 3 humans vs. 3 AI matchup that happened to ha...

Re: Galactic Empires (Wesnoth in Space)

That said, I still think it would be much more interesting to have a colony ship that is expensive and/or consumed by the effort to set up a new HQ on an uninhabited world. I disagree with this as it would slow the game down a lot unnecessarily. Can you say more about how or why it would slow the g...

Re: Galactic Empires (Wesnoth in Space)

Finally, I think the steelhive faction is too weak. Maybe they could get some interesting resistances to compensate? Like all their ships being vulnerable to antimatter but resistant to heat and explosive weapons. That might help! I think what's really missing, though, is some kind of 'heavy infant...

Re: Galactic Empires (Wesnoth in Space)

Thanks for the new features! Tried the tutorial, the Alpha Quadrant with Terrans vs. Steelhive, and the survival scenario, with me playing all 3 defenders (terrans, steelhive, and the ape-ants) vs. AIs that were mostly steelhive and dwarves. Overall, obviously the new features make the game much bet...

Re: The War of Terrador

I played the War of Terrador campaign on Wesnoth 1.15 a couple of times through the fifth or sixth scenario, called "Stealth is the Key." There are some great features in this campaign, and then there are a few that I think still need more work. My favorite part is the addition of "sp...
