How Big do You Like Your Armies?

Post by Taurus »

In our "Rebirth of the North" thread we are woundering if we should change the scenarios around to accomidate smaller, more hardeneded armies or just leave them as they are, which tends to lean towards bigger armies. So in general, what is your preference?

Personally I prefer small, advanced armies because they are easier to command. The only real exception to this is HttT, because there are so many different situations, and you can recruit units for them.

I like the following situations:
  • Medium-sized map, medium armies (16-25 units)
  • Small map, large armies (35-50 units)
  • Tiny map, small armies (3-8 units)
It's all fun and games until someone loses a lawsuit. Oh, and by the way, sending me private messages won't work. :/ If you must contact me, there's an e-mail address listed on the website in my profile.

I prefer small armies, because (like Attila) they're easier to command and the units level up more quickly, and you get more attached to them than if you have waves of cannon fodder.

I usually get 20-25 units, stocking them up to near advancement on easy levels. When i get to a hard level, i send in these almost advanced units :) it is fun to see them healing to max.

This tactic pays well now with the minimum gold :)

I usually prefer armies of about 6 to 15 units... More than that, and I find it too big and boring to really be fun.

I agree what EP said... it matters how big the map is :)

I'm dumb - would someone explain the logic of preferring the biggest army on a small map?

small to medium, sometimes large.

yes, please change rebirth of the north. the scenario where the lich tries to recruit you into the undead in th emines is WAY to large. right now something like 120 or so units are runnin garound . Ive spent 2 an da half hours on it and its not even turn 30. I like the earlirer ones fine, because they were large but not so large that my comuter wants to kill me in my sllep for making it keep track of them all. the anoyying puppies were fun to fight in their scenario for example.
try making smaller maps so people don't have to fight through999999999999999999999999 hexes to kill one leader just to do it over again on the other ones.

Oh no look out its a ray gun.
You should move to avoid the rays
the rays are coming out of the gun
if you are hit by the rays
you will be shot by the rays
the rays are fast so you should be fast to
can you win against the fast rays from the gun?

I don't think the entire campaiogn should be redone, just the largest scenarios that take FOREVER to beat. basically anything with an average of 30 or more units on screen pe side after the first 4 scenarios should b reduced in either the size of the map or number of troops OR it should have less in th eway of villages so that it doesn't drag on. I like having an income of 60 but not when everyone else does.

A large army on a large map takes WAY too much time to move. A large army on a tiny map fills up the whole map and makes manuvering awkward to the extreme. So, the small map is the right one to use large armies on.

I use the theory of:
  • Large map, small, mobile armies (3-4 groups of 6)
  • Medium map, huge army (30-40 units, and (unless multiplayer) a 6-12 good recalled units)
  • Small map, small army (10-20)
  • Tiny mage, as few as possible
