Conquest 1.0 - Now on the 1.6 Add-on Server

Post by Blueblaze »

Inspirational sequel to Empires (http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=24804), I've decided to create another Risk-like scenario which follows the gameplay of Risk a lot closer. This game is not a Risk clone, but simply draws on the ideas and concepts that fuel the game. Gameplay involves only 3 units, simplified combat, simple economy, but a battles of epic proportions. The package includes 2 maps: a modified version of a well known world map and a map of Europe created by myself. The focus of this game is on combat and diplomacy; all other factors are null. This add-on is now on the 1.6 add-on server. Please feel free to add comments and suggestions to improve the series.

Note: The map of Europe includes region bonuses (see the bottom left corner of the map) but the World Map does not include region bonuses yet. This is one of the very next things that will be added to this map.

Italy is a death trap.

Being player 1 is a massive advantage, maybe the later you start the more gold you start with?

Increase the villages/bonus in the centre and decrease the villages/bonus in the corners.

Change the labels to show all the villages you need for a bonus, maybe by using colours or saying London, UK [GB Bonus] so its easy to see.

i only played EUROPE so far and i must say that there are 2 problems - ENGLAND and TURKEY cannot be conquested

its possible to hold england with 3 infantry and turkey (without istanbul) with 5 infantry
the england-defnder wil only lose one unit per turn (max) and can replace it easily (enough income from angland and bonus to replace a dead infantry), the turkey-defender will lose 2 units max and can replace these easily with his 2 gold from the two cities there (and a base income from 2)

so england be be held by placing INFANTRY (1 gold unit) at 15,14 - 14,14 - 14,15
even if the attacker stacks up 1000 Generals on the main land, one general can attack, kill one infantry - and then cannot advance further because of ZOC
this infantry can be replaced next round

turkey can be defnded (and be hold in the same style) by placing inf on 45,29 - 44,29 - 45,31 - 46,31 - 46,32

this is a major flaw IMO, since this wil simply result in a stall of the game, because no matter how much or which units the other player has it is impossible to advance, and possible losses can be replaced in the same way -

so the Map is simply nerverending since nobody can kill the other guy
The best bet is your own, good Taste.

sorry for double post, but post was too big

my proposal to fix these problem is a slight map-adjustment

its tested and i think its ok, england and turkes can be still well defnded, but its definately possible to gain ground

(note - i also made a second "entry" to england, but this is just optional (and also an option to unload units from england) and can be held very easily, by spending 2 infantry of which one can die per round - so it can be sealed with 1 gold per round ;) ... of course the "sealing" also works from main europe)

btw, i made a test version (only for europe map) with 2 new kinds of units.

the current units are:

infantry 1 gold
(25HP, 10-2, move7, good defense on diff terrain (same as loy inf in wesnoth))

cavalry 5 gold
(90HP, 12-6, move10, weak defense on diff terrain (same as loy cav in wesnoth))

general 25 gold
(300HP, 45-8, move8, good defense on diff terrain (same as loy inf in wesnoth))

as the fighting concept is simple, it soon gets a bit boring, the standard inf is good for cheap blocking and taking villages, cavalry can kill infantry, general can kill everything and can only be fought with other generals

1.)

problem i see here is the ultimate superiority of for example genrals above everything else. you really cannot fight generals with anything else but generals, this makes of course sense kinda and i agree with the units stats

....but if even a badly wounded general kills off one cavalry afer another, so that it makes no sense to fight wounded generals with anything else but generals (while cav may be fought with infantry cost effectively (if the inf is at good terrain))

... there may be need for a unit that is placed between cavalry and general
.. a lieutenant for example ;)

lieutenant 15 gold
(200HP, 36-5, move8, good defense on diff terrain (same as loy inf in wesnoth))

can be an alternative for "not so wealthy" emperors to set up some kind of defense against a general, it will not be able to match a healthy general, but may finish off a weakened general, or can defend against one. also its cost will make it popular since 15 gold dont hurt as much as 25 gold, so lieutenant may be a way more earlier seen

2.)

to make the early game more interesting, i also suggest a unit to be placed between the normal inf and cavalry.

Elite Infantry 3 gold
(60HP, 12-4, move7, good defense on diff terrain (same as loy inf in wesnoth))

the unit i have in mind costs 3 gold, and is an infantry type, so it benefits frorm good terrain bonus. so its main character may be defensive, as you may place it on a village and hope to fend off a cavalry with some luck. of course the cavalry still has the better chances, but it may remain badly wounded and thus useless, but with some good luck it may defeat a cavalry

in any case you can also use it for offensive purposes, as it can most likely defeat a normal infantry in a city, so you can set up way cheaper offensives which allow to spend more money elsewhere :)

with these 2 units i exspect a more interesting battle expierience, also the "new" units fit into the overall unit/stat design (for example cavalry cost same as 5 infantry and has 72% of the health of 5 infantry and does 72% of the damage of 5 infantry (cav is faster though, but also does not benefit from good defense terrain) --- the elite infantry cost same as 3 infantry and has 80% of the health of 3 infantry and does 80% of the damage of 3 infantry)

i will make a game or more to test these new units and see how it works out

another issue may be the advantage of player 1 or better said the severe disadvantage of the late players (early players will steal all villages in range, s that later players are not able to distribute in the first round and losing monetary advantage very early).

due to that i think its best not only to disallow attacks in the first round, also to make the basics units have only 1 move in the first round.

with this it is impossible to conquer any cities in the first round and thus to "steal" villages from later players.

instead round one does only serve as a deployment round for the first units, later players have advantage as they can see how other players distribute their units first, but earlier players can also attack first

i have talked in various game with other players and i think i will upload a slight modification of conquest soon, of course credits given to blueblaze, but i think its worth a modification (and i dont think that blublaze may look here too soon, but of course its very welcome he may include the one or other improvement in his upload, so a mod becomes kinda obsolete)

the mod will include
--------------------

- only europe map
slightly modified as seen in above posts to fix the most urgent england/turkey problem (practically impossible to conquer/leave regions/cities of the map)

- two new units

- minimal move in first round
(only recruit)

- limited to support 2-6 players only (6 cities per player)

- 6 starting gold per player

hi whiz, i know you are a great fan of this mod (i often see you playing this mod)

of course the mod is already "finished", its really not a biggie, just 2 new units and a map fix.
and in the first round you cannot take any cities, just distribute new units
(and i limited the mod to 6 players, 6 starting cities and 6 starting gold)

i decided against uploading it, since blueblaze didnt respond so far and finally it is his mod, i dont want to hijack it.

but i can load the mod up here and you just need to copy the file into the "conquest" folder.
for making it easier i put it all into one file.

juts copy the content of the *.zip into the conquest folder

Map fixes are good.
The no taking villages on the first turn seems to increase p1 advantage.
New units are interesting and will need some testing.
I've started work on a slightly larger european map...we'll see how far I get.

if this is the case and someone dont like it delete this event from the *.cfg file
i had to set the movement for the "sergants" (initial units) to 1 manually since when they are created (at start) (with "movement left set to 1) the movement is set to the full value when its the players side turn again.

so simply delete this event (its shortly after the map data) if you want to take villages immediatly

Code: Select all

[event]
	name=turn refresh
	first_time_only=yes

[store_unit]
[filter]
type=Sergeant
[/filter]
kill=no
variable=units
[/store_unit]

{FOREACH units j}
{VARIABLE units[$j].moves 1}
[unstore_unit]
variable=units[$j]
[/unstore_unit]
{NEXT j}

{CLEAR_VARIABLE units}

[/event]

EDIT.
------

The concept of conquest is fine.
its simple economic concept of getting gold from cities and bonus by owning entire regions, and the concept of recruiting units at cities guarantee a fast and fun gameplay.

however, after a while it seems to lack some depth because the gameplay is (due to the map ?) somewhat repetitive. also the 2 new units will not fully satisfy the more sophisticated tactician ;) (but its definately an improvement)

still CONQUEST is a good base for further mods, like making city upgrades to double city income for example (for lets say 3 gold you can make a city give +1 gold so after 3 rounds it starts to pay off).

also i thought about making the combat somewhat more tactical and "deeper" by adding ranged units (ranged units would be by concept being able to "fire a NON berserker ranged attack" at a target which could not retaliate (unless its ranged itself), in melee they would be slightly weaker than the equivalent (in gld costs) melee unit -

so you could soften up targets by attacking with ranged units first
you could have grenadiers (3 gold), dragoner (5 gold), cannons (15 gold)
i made no stats yet for them, just tossing out ideas -

grenadiers would be same stats as eliteinfantry (65 HP, 7 move, movementype of infantry), with a ranged attack of 12-4 (non zerk !) and a melee of 8-4+zerk (2/3 of elite inf strengh), other stats (HP, move) same as EliteInf

dragoner would be same as cavalry (90 HP, 10 move, movementype of cavalry) with a ranged attack of 12-6 (non zerk) and a melee of 12-4+zerk (2/3 of cavalry strengh)

cannon would be same as lieutenent (except it would have only 7 move, instead of 8) (so: 200 HP, 7 move, movementype of infantry), with a ranged attack of 36-5 (non zerk) and a melee of 22-5+zerk (slightly less then 2/3 of lieutenant).

the basic idea behind the ranged units is that the mathematical chance to kil their equivalent, which is eliteinf for grenadier (both cost 3 gold, all other stats are equal), cavalry for dragoner (both cost 5, other stats equal), lieutennant for canon (both cost 15, other stats equal), is slightly higher after they shot them once. so if a grenadier shoots at a eliteinf and the elite inf attacks on its turn, the grenadier will have a sligtly higher chance to win. if a grenadier gets caught by an unharmed eliteinf then the grenadier will most likely die.
assumed both have same def chances of course.

still ranged units have of course high tactical useage, so a cannon can support an own general by pounding the enemy general once (general will be still strongest unit in game)

i think adding ranged units with this concept are fairly balanced and will give combat a new diension and more tactical depth

their useage will most likely be in later game when fully developed empires stand against each other (at this point the combat gets a bit plain usually) and you want to increase your chance to attack an enemy general by shooting with cannons at him - since its needed to guard ranged units (cavalry can take out easily grenadiers and dragons for example)

... well maybe dragoons and grenadiers arent even needed and cannons only may be better, less confusing, and the use of grenadiers and dragoons is anyway very limited (although dragoons may shoot down infantry without taking any retal)

also by giving ability to "grade towns up" by making them give +2 gold per round for 3 gold (+1 income) wil add a new depth "economywise", so you have to consider spending all in units or a little bit in better economy (will only pay off after 3 rounds though, and a lot can happen in 3 rounds)

so with easy things some depth can be added to the mod (while still keeping fast and fun gameplay), if somone wants to test it i may take a few minutes to give it a go

I think the main thing going for it is how simple it is to learn. I believe you need to KISS.

well, concrete it would be:

- adding another unit called "cannon" with a ranged attack
- (maybe a second called "dragoon" ... the "grenadier" is kinda pointless)
- add an option that allows you to upgrade cities (so that they look like monaco ... white houses with red roofs) to make them gain 2 gold income total

isnt too complicated and very KISS like ;), and woudl add some more depth, in order to make the ranged units a bit more useful i would make the rnaged attack a bit more powerful then in my post above

of course the "original/default monaco" should be canged to a normal looking city also.
to make this would take not very long

i can make this when i get exhausted (or frustrated) from making the new SX map)
in any case when i feel i want to play/test it i would simply make it

- my interest has a bit decreased regarding conquest though ;)
mainly because of the lack of depth and i could now spend a lot of time making a conquest mod that satisfy me (it would probably more complicated than the things i mentioned here) .. which probaly nobody really needs

... since there are the guys of MODERN COMBAT which make basically a more sophisticated CONQUEST variant, so i can make as well an SX map and play MODERN COMBAT if i want a "conquest-like" game with some depth ;)
The best bet is your own, good Taste.

btw, just as a side note:

i didnt wanted to imply that modern combat is a conquest-derivat, i think modern combat was developed independently of conquest

still i called it a conquest-variant since its gameplay is similar (slightly, there are of course huge differences -- they are similar as they are different from normal wesnoth and feature cities (where you can recruit units and get incme from)), or better said:
if you like conquest but want want a bit more depth you may give modern combat a try

I'd call conquest a simple modern combat. Had a small idea for an improvement. How about adding recruit inf, cav, general, etc to the right click menu to make it quicker to recruit. I'm thinking mostly of late game when people inf spam, less clicks should speed it up a bit.
