Is there any specific type of tree you're modeling this after? This looks very similar to the white oaks that grow near my house, albeit with denser leaf structure.

An oak, stretched and skewed to fit into the frame and still look tall. It's mentioned in the Ancient Wose description, after all.

I don't think you changed the linework at all, but two of my problems still went away :) The left arm still looks a tiny bit too thin at the base, but that could just be me.

I'd keep the left arm as is, or maybe make the lower left arm curve more branchlyly (this is a word now) Kinda like the right one, maybe? but curving to our left instead of our right?

Linework/layout finalised. Moving on to rendering.

EDIT: bark render test. I'd like feedback on this before I go too far into the process - it's quite time-consuming.

The bark seems to be coming along well, fairly realistically, my only concern is that the cuts (like the big gash in particular) seem a bit out of place compared to the bark. I think this comes from the fact that the viewer appears to be looking into it from above, and I would expect to be seeing it as fairly straight-on and narrow, or even from below, given the height of the wose.

Have you given any thought to some green lichen to add a bit of color/break up the bark?

:hmm: hmm, his left arm (the one with the fist) is still a problem. you didn't change anything about it, didn't you? please have a look at some real oaks to get a feeling for how their branches grow and behave. look at those magnificient gnarly branches of an old oak! I'm sure that you can find a better way to draw the arm. branches branch out in much more interesting ways than just three sticks comming straight out of each shoulder. on the other hand i really love those two root-like hands - good stuff!

for the bark yesterday's criticism still applies likewise: it is too yellowish glossy/reflective. and oak bark is pretty desaturated and almost grey-ish in real life if i remember correctly. you could also start to add deeper gaps between the bark chunks to break up the smooth appearance. moss and stuff like turuk suggested will also help.

The trouble is also keeping things compact enough - sprawl too much, and it'll lose the sense of tall-ness. The way the branches split at the top is more inspired by a beech or something like that that grows more vertically. I'll try to make the left arm a bit more of an interesting shape, though. Maybe add a healed break point for a lost branch.

I'll carry on rendering the trunk and see what takes my fancy.

EDIT: layout change. Improvement?

EDIT: I think this is what the final render on the woody sections is likely to look like. Maybe some mossy patches, but i don't want too many. I bumped the saturation down a touch, darkened some of the cracks, added some grey-green and brownish lichens. Any final thoughts before i spend doing a test render for the leafy bits and the long train journey to Glasgow on friday rendering?

I know it might not be reused that often but...

maybe a tutorial on rendering wood would be a good idea...

Probably - I'm working directly from photo reference at present.

Know of any?

nope, I thought you had a sort of systematic process similar to the way chainmails are rendered...

it it's entirely handmade, I guess a tuto wouldn't be that usefull

but wow... I admire you for doing it

Nope, it's handpainted. It's fairly easy though, as a texture. Lots of wobbly lines of various colours.

Somewhat odd question, but are the eyes staying pure white or will you be fiddling with them at all?

Keeping them greyish, as on the sprite.

Okay, just curious. Works for me, I just didn't know if you had anything else in mind.

I can't resist the following joke. What about something like this for the eyes?

Looks great so far, awesome work on the texturing and woody look. Not much more to say, it's hard to give critique since it's still just shaping up.
