Re: Northern Alliance art thread
Level one archer prelim. might fiddle the colour of the tunic at some point - it's a bit too similar to the skin colour at present. The non-bow hand needs...something... too. It's difficult to distinguish from the arm without clothing.
Maybe a bracer.

Re: Northern Alliance art thread
Pretty good, but I have some thoughts on the archer:
- It's kinda weird how wesnothian archers hold their bows in that weird, perfect stiff position. Personally I'd like to see some more natural poses
- Where's the quiver? He has the strap and all, but no quiver or arrows.
I hope you don't mind, but I did an edit to show what I mean:

Re: Northern Alliance art thread
The quiver is at his waist, in front of his bow arm. it's not that clear, i grant you. But i don't like back-mounted quivers - waist-mounted ones are much more realistic, since drawing an arrow from the waist is easier than from behind. If it were possible, i'd have the arrows stuck in the ground in front of him, but clearly that's not really gonna work...
Your bow-position's better, though - what i'll probably do is use something like that for the level 2, to distinguish it from the level 1.

Re: Northern Alliance art thread
Heh. I thought that was the bottom part of the quiver, and you simply forgot to draw the other part (hey, it happens).
But in that case, may I suggest moving the quiver to the other side? It would a) be more visible and b) make more sense there, as he is holding the bow in the other hand.
Also, the bow in the original ought to be redone. It just doesn't look right. I'm not talking about position here - I mean the bow as a whole. I don't know exactly how to put it - it just looks strange, especially but not only the string.
I hope I'm not complaining too much, it looks really nice otherwise.

Re: Northern Alliance art thread
Mm, the string looks too thick, annoyingly. I need to have a proper look at some reference.
I might move the quiver over.
EDIT: do-over. Changed the tunic colour to match the Landsman, since one major problem was that the arms were not distinguishable from the tunic. Decided nuts to my principles about quiver-realism and put it on the back - it's much clearer what it is there. Fixed up the bow to make it look a little more solid, and stole the string from the Poacher. Added a bracer to the bow-forearm.
Yeah.

Re: Northern Alliance art thread
Better, but the bow still bothers me. It's the antialiasing - It makes it look really blurry and weird. I mean, things are supposed to be antialiased, yes, but I think it might look better without.
I'm sorry to say this, but perhaps redoing the bow, with a slightly different shape as well, would be best. The problem is that the rest of the sprite is really good, and then the bow isn't that good.
But overall, much better. Nice tunic color too.

Re: Northern Alliance art thread
See, I like that bow on a level one - it's small, simple and doesn't look too powerful - I'm not a wild fan of the bow on the poacher/trapper, so. Part of the problem might be the forum background, i think.
Meh, personal opinion, i'm happy with it =)

Re: Northern Alliance art thread
After long silence... Initial blocking for the Champion.
I'm pleased with the helm, though it's maybe a little big, and with the sword, although it looks crappy against the forum background, (it has a leather wrapped portion above the hilt, hence him holding the blade...) but less so with the remainder. I might skip the cloak altogether, i'm not sure. Overall, despite the fact that the shirt is baggy, he still looks a little too bulky for my taste.

Re: Northern Alliance art thread
That champion is amazing. If it was my art I would keep the cloak, but cut down on the baggy-ness of his shirt a little to make him look more military. Just my thoughts.

Re: Northern Alliance art thread
Too many projects, not enough time >.<
I prefer to lose the cloak for two reasons - easier animation, and realism - cloaks in melee combat are not all the practical IMO...
EDIT: Champion hopefully finalised. Just the level 2 archer left, then animations.
Wonder where ESR's got to, and what progress is being made on this beyond the artwork...
EDIT again: attaching the attachment helps...

Re: Northern Alliance art thread
Look on the bright side - if this project never goes anywhere (and perhaps even if it does), I'm going to steal this art for an IE-related project.

Mordante told me in IRC (#wesnoth-dev at freenode.net) that ESR is busy with GNU Emacs and won't have time for Wesnoth for a rather long time.thespaceinvader wrote:Wonder where ESR's got to, and what progress is being made on this beyond the artwork...
Yes, it is sad. I'm already suffering the effects of his absence.

Re: Northern Alliance art thread
Ah well, c'est la vie i guess. I'll finish up the base frames and animate these in what time I have free (though soon enough that free time will expand a fair bit...quitting my job =D)
