help with faction units!

Post by Caiyln »

I'm new to creating units, and i worked on some, but I just can't make them look right, they suck ass! I don't know how to shade and make their faces properly, and i was wondering if anybody was interesting in helping me out? Any pointers, anything would be appreciated.

Here are the rough units:

Your people are REALLY red. You might want to use the colors from actually made units.
For black clothing, try using different shades of gray. Look at other units to see how to shade. Same for other objects, like swords and such.
Also, you might not want to use a real world sign on your units, it is wesnoth, not earth :D

Are you using GIMP? The dodge/burn tool is pretty nice when it comes to easy-shading. Also, even if something is black, it's actually gray. It needs highlights.

Also, using the paintbrush instead of the bucket tool might help. That is, for creating new sprites:

- Concept.
- Outline. Any way you want. Ink tool, pencil tool, etc...
- Color - you can use the bucket or pencil tool for this
- Shading. - Paintbrush/Airbrush

This is a very general workflow. For the best (tm) for flow, go to art contributions, scroll down to art blog,* and read it. All of it.

*Wayfarer - finish it. Pleeasse?

The Gnu Image Manipulation Program. Basically open source photoshop.

Did you -at all- read the Art wiki page? And maybe the graphics programs page? Where it says that you need a program which supports alpha channels (transparency)?

I agree with Urs here. Ms paint is no good. :(

Ask your father, if you can download gimp.

Nice colors! :)

False! It depends of artist.... as I know Neo uses MS Paint to do his sprites.... I guess there is no need to say anything else...

An outstanding good artist like Neo can draw sprites with anything, but i think gimp has more options than paint. It makes it easier. 8)

The lack of proper grammar leads people to believe otherwise.

Capitalize your sentences. It makes you look more leet, because it makes you look more smart; as if near-perfect grammar is so trivially easy that "laziness as an excuse" doesn't make sense. Sometimes, as with the older members of the community, it's not a veneer; it really is that easy - likewise pretending as practice is the best training for the real thing.

anyway, as for help, i'm pretty sure you can find some helpful things in the wiki, by example in the "sprite art" part of this page ==> http://www.wesnoth.org/wiki/Create_Art

As is Sam Vimes. Granted, He's got the wrong type of culture, but he's very very cultured, and in his own, predictable way, incredibly intelligent.
