Which program are you using to make the images? It might already have the feature.

I'm using GIMP, I'm new to the program so I'm still new to all the features. I was also wondering if Macromedia would be any good??

It is definitely doable in the GIMP. I can't tell you how, tho, because i've never done this myself, but a bit of googling should help you alright ;)

Go-go gadget canned response!

To make a .GIF animation with GIMP:
1. Create an XCF image with each frame on a seperate layer. First frame goes on the bottom layer, last frame goes on top.
2. Do a 'save as' and change the extension type to .GIF.
3. A dialogue will appear giving you the option to 'save as animation'. Do just that.
4. A second dialogue allows you to choose (a) how long each frame is displayed and (b) whether or not you want your frames to stack.
5. You can also adjust the timing of each individual frame. After you have saved it, look at the names of your layers. They will all have been renamed to 'Frame 1 (180ms) (replace)' 'Frame 2...' etc etc. The number in brackets, 180ms in this example, dictates how many miliseconds the frame is displayed. Change this number to tune the timing of your frames.

Hope this helps.

Good day.

That would be worth adding to the wiki...
Feel free to PM me if you start a new terrain oriented thread. It's easy for me to miss them among all the other art threads.

Does anyone have a tutorial for making animations in ImageReady/Photoshop?

I can't seem to figure out how to get the different layers to work....

My problem-
The tutorials I've found (When I can find ones that don't strictly deal with making scrolling text...) seem to want me to modify the layers as I go along in ImageReady, but I've ALREADY modified them and drawn/shadowed them as single frames in Photoshop.
I'll put the first frame on, no problem...but when I try to add another frame, all the frames mirror the frame I just added.....and the first one goes away.

I'm sure there is something really simple I'm missing, and that once it's pointed out I'll slap myself on the forehead and go "Duh, why the $%^& didn't I think of that?!?!"
But for right now, I'm just getting really frustrated, so if anyone could help me out with this, I'd certainly appreciate it.

Thanks for your time!

if you make a new frame in Imageready, it has the same layers as the previous layer. deselect some layers that were selected in previous frame.

youll notice then how it goes.

I think I could have been more clear about the problem I'm having, sorry....and I'm not at home, so I can't fire up PS and try this, but my problem seems to be-

When I try to open another PNG file and add it to the animation, it's as if the first never existed.
I've tried to de-select a layer, but it's as if there *are* no other layers to de-select....it appears to totally overwrite the previous frame.
Do I have to save the animation in between adding frames so it will "stick"?

This is my first time playing around with this, so I'm a complete beginner, and I'm sorry if I seem obtuse.

Thank you for your time,

yup.

PNG does not have layers.

only PSD has. save your layered image as PSD, then the layers remain.
