Unit Height Corrections

Post by Jetrel »

Certain units, especially in the human race, are a bit too short right now. Some are so short that they fall into the same bracket as goblins, dwarves, and saurians.

We should increase their height - doing so will not foul up proportion, because our sprites are already drawn in somewhat of a "Super-Deform" style, with heads and hands that are WAAY too big for their bodies. This will simply make them slightly less so.

When doing this, we should be careful to keep units *slightly* larger as they level up, to provide an intuitive read on power (one major aspect of visual level differentiation).

This would be a perfect job for some folks like Shadow, or Sangel, or Disto, or anyone else itching to contribute.

The list is as follows:
  • The entire human spearman tree needs a few extra pixels of height - every unit. The royal guard, as the primary human melee unit, needs to be taller than most humans, and right now his is somewhat shorter than the average human/elf.
  • The human bowman needs to be adjusted so that he is a few pixels shorter than the longbowman, not the several pixels that he is now.
  • The orcish crossbowman also needs 3-5 extra pixels of height.
There are others, but these will take a huge bite out of the problem. In doing this, do not stretch the images, but rather move chunks of them apart with a selection tool, and manually fill in the pixels with the pencil tool, mimicking the patterns used around the empty portion, or extending plates of armor in a logical manner.

Also, shadow, if you use photoshop/gimp - be sure to set to filtering method in the preferences to "nearest neighbor" rather than "bilinear/bicubic".

They look less "cutesy", more "noble". I kinda liked the "cutesy" feel, but if this standardises the graphics more, I suppose it's a good thing.

I'm busy working on graphics for Under the Burning Sun right now, but it looks like Shadow has the task well in hand, so I don't think I'm needed here.

I second that. I liked how the spearmen were kinda cute... don't change the goblin spearmen..

Something about the human spearman tree really annoys me so i might make my own version of it soon anyway, but it was annoying before anyway but good work.

This may help
from left to right: human, halfling, gnome, half-orc, dwarf, half-elf, elf
and no, the gnome isn't catching the big guy's balls, he is casting a spell :D

Um... that's obviously incorrect for Wesnoth, since elves are bigger than men.

IAC, its not like there is a standard for any of this, and units aren't drawn to scale anyway.
