Cave spider

Post by beetlenaut »

This is my attempt at a new cave spider. There was one like this on my counter, and it seemed pretty creepy. How does it strike you?

Very nice - better than mine is going. But it needs an abdomen - move the back legs apart a little to fit it in. That aside, great work =D

Animate it, and I'd say it's well worth a commit.

Another one off my plate =D my workload is lightening by the day.

I agree that some of the abdomen could be showing, but the legs don't need to be moved, the abdomen is behind them and spiders have a very narrow waist.

I wouldn't get in range of this spider, for sure! :lol2:

You could also do with delineating the joints a little more - currently there's no distinction between the segments, and the legs look like bent tubes rather than jointed ones.

Whoops! I did completely forget the abdomen. (And I was the one who had complaining about incorrect spider anatomy!) It is pretty small in this guy, but I'll add it and work on the legs.

Edit: updated the first post.

I really love the legs. Fantastic.

But the abdomen you hurridly plastered on... looks a bit hurried, in my opinion. Maybe it´s just that it´s too smoothly shaded, and should rather be in the colors of the head? I don´t know. But it´s a very minor nit-pick, because it´s an awesome spider.

I don't think anything was wrong with the shading, but I see your point about the color. I tried it darker and liked it better, so I made that small update.

Animating will be a pain, but I will chip away at it until I'm tired of drawing legs.

I think it looks better now, yeah. But it´s hard to tell without comparing it to the last version.

Looks good, TSL's spider was nice but it bugged me because of the realistic legs. Thin legs aren't visible enough for a spider to fit in a Wesnoth sized hex, as legs are essentially the most recognised body part of a spider, thus they need to be easily viewable.

I'm getting a real Lycosid (wolf spider) feel from this spider, which is cool. But i think it would fit certain fantasy expectations better if it had a larger, more bulbous abdomen.

I would actually kinda like to see both versions go in as different kinds of giant spider. This one would be more like a giant forest spider or something. TSI's has more of a troglobytic feel to it, with the eyes and mouthparts as they are. This one seems more 'outdoorsy'.

I like it really much. :)
It looks so much scarier than the old one, that I might start to avoid spiders in SX for example. :)
Check out my sprites!

This one's better quality, and finished. It's perfectly OK. We just need some animations.

EDIT: I did some minor tweaking (fixed the shading on the abdomen, did a bit to the colour on the back, which looked kinda flat) and changed the shadow to jetryl's new standard. Any anims should be done on this one.

Speaking of animations, it'd be cool if in the ranged attack animation the spider would strech its legs to elevate the body, and then bend the abdomen under the cephalothorax to bring the spinnerets pointing forward.
