thespaceinvader sprites: current, animals

Post by thespaceinvader »

At Jetryl's suggestion and with JAP's inspiration, I'm going to begin to fill my spare time whilst I'm waiting on portrait critique doing various sprites. I'm starting with a cross between a warthog and a wooly mammoth, currently called (most uninspiredly) a tusker, though it will probably get a better name... Initials below.

Any thoughts whilst i continue with shading and texturing?

EDIT: did some work on that. Not sure whether i've conveyed the wooliness well, though...

EDIT: progress reporting: Green=done Red=unfinished

Looking good, the face could need some brighter shades and the body some darker ones (some kind of stripes?)to add to the wooliness (the wolf is a good example of dirty fur, it could look nice on this one as well)

Improvement?

I did my best to match the technique of the wolf, but as far as i can tell, it's based on semi-noise...

Better. Although could you make the tusks a bit more curved and a lighter colour so they stand out more?

Since he's not facing straight forward, but rather towards the hex SE of him, shouldn't his right tusk (our left) appear smaller to the viewer than his left tusk? Right now they look like they have the same number of pixels, which makes them appear lopsided.

Definitely some improvement, but I'll have to agree with turin and rod. ( about the curve, not necessarily the brightness)

His right one looks pretty good, but the left one's still a bit long considering the perspection. It could curve slightly back or up. Subpixel shading?

err... I sometimes forget the confusion in using left and right in situations like this. I meant his left tusk with my previous crit. Sorry.

Thought you probably did... hence, i fixed that one =P

EDIT: I decided to go with three full levels - mummy pig, daddy pig and baby pig (well, more accurately baby, adult, and old pig).

The double tusks on the snout of the gorer can be pulled off, but I'm not so sure about the ones up by his ears. Me thinks you went a bit crazy with the pointy things.... ;)

Awww... maybe just one tusk up by the ears then - the previous level has them, after all.

Hmm, fair enough, but maybe if they were only just a little bigger. They do seem to protrude from the ridge along his eyebrows, and so I cannot imagine even if they were large enough that they would have much purpose besides protecting the eyes?
