Saurian Augur Portrait (in progress)

Post by Jormungandr »

Hello again, everyone.

I've been out of touch with Wesnoth for a while, but I'd like to get back into the portrait game. Currently, I'm filling one out for the last unit line in the Drake faction, the augur, and I wanted to poll the forums for feedback. Criticize away!

Attached is the version I'm working on at the moment (he's not shaded at all, and I may need to redesign the aura of the vision-ball-thingy a bit).

A problem that I noticed is that the neck is significantly shorter than the other saurian portrait that you did, around a third of the length.

Aside from that it looks good, and could turn out better than the other one.

I think it's odd foreshortening... try moving the head as it is further to the left of the picture...

Great image, otherwise...

Also, how precisely did you do that texturing around the edge of the robe? I'm very interested.

(I can also help with the "aura" business; I learned a few tricks in the attack icon project.)

:) The Saurian looks good, no faults are apparent.
:? The presence of the vision blobe thingy seems odd to me.

Nothing terribly fancy. I used two muddy colors, one light, one dark. The light one was applied in random dabs of the pencil tool at about 75% opacity, the dark one atop that at about 90% opacity.

Closeup below.

Technically, an augur was a priest who interpreted the gods' will by studying the flight of birds. Somewhat more loosely, "augury" is used as a generic term for reading the future in signs, portents, and the like.

Wanting to give him something visibly magical to do, I took this even further and gave him a direct view to some(where/when) else.

Sorry for the double post, but here's the shaded version.

Cool looking. That thing in his orb is still kinda strange, though.
I can be stupid too! Thus, I hate myself. ;)

nice, the front most horn on his forehead should probably be half in shadow, but apart from that I can't seen any real problems.

I think part of the problem with the orb might be that white blob, I assume it's meant to be the moon behind the tree, but it also kind of looks like it could be a skull. Or is that an intentional effect?

The saurian himself, though, looks really cool.

An excellent picture. I think he would look more "active" if he weren't standing in front of the ball, but rather holding it in one of his hands. That's just me, however, the pic is great as is.
Look at me, you will see what the moon has done to me / I'm a child of the brightest of nights...

• Everything about the anatomy and shading basically looks perfect, now.

• Could you post a version without the "vision orb"?
I'd like to take a swing at drawing a new one.

Sure. I'll make it a larger one, too, so you don't have to work at that tiny scale.
