A campaign that no longer exists?

Post by Zaklog »

Are there mainline campaigns that were taken down? I'm asking because I just started playing Wesnoth again after a couple of years not doing so, and I seem to remember a scenario I've played that does not appear to be in any of the mainline campaigns. In this scenario, you're playing as elves. You start at the northeast corner, and there is a winding path through a forest you have to take to an objective on the southwest corner. You're fighting undead (possibly orcs too), and I think there's something on an island near the middle of the map, possibly a main character unit. I may be mixing up that island from another scenario entirely.

This must be fairly early in the campaign because I remember some kind of comments about the skeletons taking little damage from most of your weapons.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I've played almost all of the currently available mainline campaigns, and I haven't seen this. Am I imagining things?

So, for anyone interested, I just found the scenario I was talking about. It was an earlier version of The Vale of Tears from the campaign The South Guard. I'm a little frustrated that no one even replied, though. Ah well.

I thought about vale of tears, but because in Vale of Tears the player starts at the northwest corner, I thought you must mean a different scenario.

Oh, bloody heck, you're right. It was the northWEST corner. That probably didn't help.

I think some were abandoned. Campaigns is quite a lot of work - the initial
creation part is probably more fun.

I don't have a great solution for getting more people to maintain campaigns;
perhaps if contributing to campaigns could be simplified. E. g. if people
could invest only a bit of their time, without having to really dive down
deep into e. g. XML or lua. And perhaps adding a default scenario
creator right into wesnoth directly (the main menu) to encourage people
to design scenarios. They could get early feedback and improve on
it, thus raising the quality. But right now I think the entry barrier is
quite high, and after some time most people just move on for many
reasons. I think I myself was inactive for almost 10 years, a few years ago
or so. :)

I did want to create a campaign as well; my local pen and paper group
literally create TONS of stories over ~10 years or so, so these would
just have to be adapted. But it's still a time investment and there are
so many other things to do with higher priority for me - I suppose this
applies to some other people.

IMO it may be better to focus on making the GOOD campaigns even
BETTER, because I think this is where wesnoth REALLY excels. The
mainline campaigns are nice, in particular for newcomers - but some
of the addon campaigns are really so much more interesting to play.
I'd love to see more improvements on that such campaigns.
