"Heroes of Wesnoth" rip-off game?
Is this some kind of rip-off of Wesnoth? Or is the site I got the link from just really really old?
http://heroesofwesnothblog.wordpress.com/
I found the link through this site: http://Www.happypenguin.org
It's a collection of linux games, most of which are free.
But there's got to be some kind of explanation as to why they are listing a game called "Heroes of Wesnoth" but they dont have any link to Wesnoth itself, which I believe has a linux version.
Anyone know anything about this?

There's a rather long discussion about this in the game development forum. The idea was first proposed there and the author worked on it based on the ideas and opinions of the Wesnoth community, so it's hardly an underhanded thing.

Not a rip-off, more like a spin-off.

Ok, well I'm all for spin-offs. But if you want to do it right I think you ought to get bob the mighty involved.

Well then, you should contact the individual who made Heroes and inform him of your feelings on the matter.

Not only is Wesnoth on the site, it's also the highest rated game on the site.

Hmm, a Heroes of Might and Magic-like game using Wesnoth? A shame it's only available for Linux…

What, you can't afford to buy Linux?Kalajel wrote:Hmm, a Heroes of Might and Magic-like game using Wesnoth? A shame it's only available for Linux…

Don't fret too much, it's not really playable and it's written from scratch so it's only using some of the art. From my point of view, it seems like the Wesnoth code is so big and complicated that it would be faster to write this kind of game from scratch than modify it to produce a HoMM-like. It would probably be possible to utilize bits and pieces of the code as needed however. Looking at the screenshots, for example, this game would greatly benefit from BfW's terrain blending. Not a copy and paste job, but if he can look at the code and see what's going on, then write his own version. I'm not really a skilled enough developer to speculate any further (or this far, for that matter).
If I had time enough I'd love contributing to something like this or starting my own from scratch. And I would totally let the hero fight like in HoMM4, because I swear up and down that that feature was awesome. (Okay, I'd make that configurable.)

Actually, there's an open source HOMMIII engine that is made to run both the original games assets and any additional ones desired that he could use. Use all original graphics (or at least non-HOMMIII) and it could be used for such a project.
