Wesnoth 1.7.8 aka 1.8-beta1

Post by ivanovic »

Wesnoth 1.7.8 aka 1.8-beta1 is out!

This is the ninth release of the 1.7.x development branch. That means it may include a bigger amount of bugs than the 1.6.x branch and each version is not compatible with another one from the 1.6.x and 1.7.x branch since we do change quite a lot between the releases. Keep in mind, it might be a lot more buggy than the 1.6.x branch so don't be disappointed if you get a crash every now and then. "Normal" players should not use this release, you should stay with the stable branch. But if you want to test the future of Wesnoth and help us find bugs early, you are welcome to check out 1.7.8.

Ups, wrong (copy&paste can be bad! )!

This is the first beta for the upcoming 1.8 series. We do encourage every player to test this release and report all bugs they find so that we can still fix them before we release 1.8. Beside this content creators should start porting their work to the soon to come 1.8 series. Since we are in a feature freeze for some time already, WML should be rather stable. The add-on server was already restarted. Please make sure that everything you upload is compatible with 1.7.8 and later.

The most notable change is probably that the new multiplayer lobby is finaly active and used by default. We know that there are probably some problems left, but please report all issues you find, so that we know what is still broken and not working as expected. We do need your testing since otherwise we will most likely not find open issues (you can't test something like the new multiplayer lobby that is designed to work nicely for *hundreds* of players just with some three or four local clients... ).

Beside this huge change we fixed some 40 reported bugs, the drakes should now be completely converted to the new baseframes and some translations already managed to complete their efforts to get 1.8.x completely translated. That does not mean that no helping hands are required. If you want to help with translation to some language, just contact the respective translation maintainer as listed in our wiki.

Some other important things to mention:
***
We switched the MP lobby to the new lobby made by ilor during his GSoC 2009 project.
***
This release is the first beta for the upcoming 1.8 stable series. We are not expecting any incompatible changes, and have been in feature freeze for some time. Moreover a brand new add-on server has been started which will most likely be used for the following 1.7.x releases as well as the 1.8.x stable series. This means that all user-made content providers should consider porting and testing now, in order to be ready for 1.8.
***

Of course there is also the full changelog listing (almost) all the changes since 1.7.7. A changelog with changes that might be visible to most users (and only includes these) is the players changelog.

The Windows package is already available. You can find it on the download page.

The MacOSX package is already available. You can find it on the download page.

Many of the Linux packages have already been created. All known packagers have been contacted. Information about where to get the respective binaries or how to get them work you get on the Linux binaries site for the Linux binaries. Download links for the other supported systems will be listed at the downloads page once the binaries are available.

As a fallback you can also get the sources from http://files.wesnoth.org/ - you should first try to get files through SourceForge to help us save bandwidth. Please get the files from sourceforge.net if possible.

The multiplayer server for 1.7.8 is already up and running. This server can only be used to play with 1.7.8. If you do encounter problems, please report them.

A new add-on server was started when 1.7.8-beta1 was released. All content uploaded to this new server should be compatible with the following 1.7.x beta releases, release candidates for 1.8, as well as the final 1.8.x series. If you encounter any problems with content from the add-on server not working as expected, please notify the content's author, most of them should be here in the forums.

If you find any bugs don't hesitate to report them, but please read the instructions on how to post bugs first. Instructions for bug reporting can be found at http://www.wesnoth.org/wiki/ReportingBugs.

Enjoy!

PS: Within the next seven days anyone asking when the binary for xyz will be ready will be banned and the post will be deleted. Such questions just distract the developers and packagers and don't do any good, so better not ask them...
Bugreports in the forums tend to get forgotten. You will get better results by following the guidelines and report them in the bugtracker.

If you are one of those content creators who is porting their work from version 1.6 to 1.8, you may want to check out the post titled "Important v1.8 Syntax Changes (also applies to 1.7.8+)" in the WML Workshop.

A couple of short comments; I don't feel like filing bug report(s) since I need to go to bed:
- about this forum; when I login, phpBB should not "return to Index page", but to the page I was on (that's probably a setting somewhere),
- about beta1; main screen in multiplayer mode won't turn fullscreen on/off when I press Ctrl-F,
- about beta1; in 1.6 when I click nicks I see what games people are in (behind their nicks and on left side it changes); not in the beta,
- about beta1; when I double click the red nicks (the folks that are playing) and then click "Close", I get a Segmentation fault (I'm using GNU/Linux 2.6.26-2; gcc 4.3.2)

I agree. You can change it via the preferences menu, but that takes much longer. I'm used to always using Ctrl+F in-game so this part really sticks out. (Of course, resizing the lobby causes bugs in 1.7.8, whether it's a switch to full screen or resizing a windowed mode.)

I also agree. Very useful to quickly find which game a person is in.

It was already reported. I think it's already fixed in trunk. If not, it'll probably be fixed by 1.7.9.

Nope, it's not. Also, that should belong to the Website subforum; I can't check every single post elsewhere to find mentions of forum issues.
