Wesnoth 1.6.5 won't work with Ubuntu karmic koala

Post by CaroleB »

I upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic on Friday and Wesnoth doesn't work properly any more.

There is no sound (I have tried installing the wesnoth-music oackage but it says it is already at the current release) and when I try and quit, the window just hangs up and I have to kill the process.

Any ideas?

Regarding the ubuntu bug tracker, sound is (due to some strange pulseaudio setup) still borked in the latest ubuntu version. Have a look at the respective bug report that ubuntu has and notice that it affects all games relying on sdl-mixer.

Freshly installed Koala here (me -> linux first timer), no probs with BfW so far, can't judge about sound since I disable sounds.

Actually, I feel more and more confirmed in my opinion to use Ubuntu's LTS versions only and even then wait for a month or so 'til the major problems are known and solved...

They don't fix anything except security issues. It's literally their official policy.

Actually, this is false.
I consider the problem mentioned as a case of instance two.
However, even iff this wouldn't be the case: Normally, there are at least good workarounds available after a while.

Yeah, that and "really major" problems.

iirc, they don't consider sounds not working to be that major.

We'll see. I'd consider a non-working library a major problem.
However, you're free to use any other distribution.

Heh, don't worry about it. My criticisms of Ubuntu are minor compared to, say, Windows. Go ahead and try it.

Whoohooo! That restores my enthusiasm. I already managed to (staticaly) mount a windows NTFS (data) partition and it only took me about ten different wiki pages to go through. :D

I've been hanging back one release, and it's been working great. I just upgraded from Intrepid to Jaunty about a month ago, and I've had no issues whatsoever.

Ubuntu's PulseAudio implementation has been positively awful for many releases now, by all accounts. For people who have issues like this I'd consider giving OSSv4 a shot and kicking ALSA and PulseAudio to the curb. Here's one tutorial I found after a quick search, seems to be relatively complete.
