Well uhm I don't know what the english equivalent of the tool in Photoshop is.

With the tools I can make an specific color area brighter and darker depending on the settings.

Normally I shade with a pencil but there are to few variations in the shadings.
To save some time I add further gradients of the color with this tools. That means normally I would have a color depth of 3 tones. With the tool I add further tones to get a smooth transition between the shadings.
And I can use it like a light source I know a light shines on this surface and I use this tool like a lamb to display it.
I simulate the light sources with this trick. On the other side I can add further shades to the shadows with this small trick.
To conclue if I had 10 color tones in a sprite after I have used the tools I got 20 tones.

With the brushes I overdraw the linework a bit so that the lines dissappear or look that edgy anymore.

If it doesn't work now I'll go nuts.

I hate php!

The tools are called "dodge" and "burn" in english.

Thanks, I'll give that a go.

Looks like I'm the first one to post results for this step? And here I was feeling like I was procrastinating it.

I admit I was a little sceptical about the dodge/burn method but I'm impressed at how well it seems to have come out. There are probably a few areas that are messy in this version, but I'd like to check in that I'm going in the right direction here.

Thanks for reminding me, Stilgar...

I'd never used the dodge/burn tool before, but it seems fairly powerful.

How's the shading on this dwarf? The stone base needs work, I know, but I'll do that later...

Whereas I actually was procrastinating.

Here you go. Is that the sort of thing that you wanted? I pushed pixels around for ages, but it doesn't look majorly different to me. :?

P.S. When this is done, shall we set up a page on the wiki for this thread that demonstrates each person's individual steps through the stages? I think that would be a useful reference.

[EDIT] Here's the prior stage for comparison

Igor It lives.(the topic)
I always wanted to say that.

Even though I let things slide. I'm proud of you guys. You graped the tricks pretty fast.

Your problem was that you were a bit to advanced though the last topic. You shaded to much beforehand. Neorice does it this way and it is possible but very hard work. The trick with the doge and burn tool is that you have big enough areas of equal colors to work with. You did still a pretty good job for the next try I would advice you to play around a bit with larger color areas.

Good Idea a hall of fame as encouragement for those who took part.

@turin good. Exactly what I meant large dark areas and some Highlights. The lightning isn't completely right but already pretty close. Very nice.

@Master Stilgar
Come on an old dog can still learn some new tricks.

The shading goes into the right direction and is pretty slick. Definitely the right way to go. Also Good work.
Perhaps some darker areas to deepen some of the shadows? :)

Ah, okay. I noticed also that you want to have somewhere near middling colour values. Since my dark areas were already very dark, burn had less of an effect.

So is there anything left to do on mine?

Don't know. the interest for the first while there wasn't that high. partly my fault though.

If I start a new one I would probably include another a extra topic to get more participents though .

Hi all :)

I'm terribly sorry for disappearing. School was bugging me and then I simply forgot about wesnoth. Is it possible that I rejoin and catch up with the steps?

Yeah sure.
The others who have started and never finished can still post their stuff too.

I must sort some stuff out before I start a new topic.

Nice.
I would try to blend the different color areas together instead of separating them with a one line border.
I especial mean the rose and the arm.
(Actual I would make an edit to show it but I'm experiencing technical difficulties  )

The next step would be adding some higher contrasts made with the burn and doge tool. Just try it out they add some nice light and dark effects.
Else nicely done.

No no one needs to rush it. Take your time for those who still want to finish it. it's not like it will run away. We do it for the fun not for the sake of it. Don't forget it or you'll burn out.
