I believe that the number of sides is determined entirely by the number of side starting positions defined by the map, but I could be wrong.

Some more points:
Put the closing " for the map data into a new line (I get error map is not rectangular).
Delete [attack] and [/attack] (only the tags, for example the flaming sword does not use them)

I still get the unexpected character warning, but i can play the scenario and everything looks fine.
