Well meow! (as in a catkin faction)

Post by kyi_the_bard »

This is one of a series of factions I plan on coding for a campaign entitled "Culture Shock".

It revolves around a group of Wesnoth soldiers who become strained on an island/continent where many cultures and peoples exist, but they have little interaction with each other, besides the occasional conflict.

I'm going over this faction first as it the main faction the player controls.

CatKin
The Catkin are rarely seen even by the other peoples of the forest, but by no means are they antisocial. In fact the Catkin are very friendly and are quick to trust. They may seem naive, and they may be, but they are also primal in their fury. A single Catkin can take down prey much large then they are, but more frightening is the fact Catkin attack in groups. A Catkin makes a great friend, but a greater foe.

The Catkin are by nature hunters, a role dominated by females, mostly because a high percentage of the population is female. They also are limited in their technology. They do not use weapons such as swords or bows, but their fishermen do have a wide assortment of tools (nets, spears, traps) to help them do their job. The Catkin also have almost no understanding of magic, as very few can seem to use it, little lone control it.

The Catkin aren't what you would call stupid. They have many leaders, all of which are skilled in various things, so working together their people know much. The Loins and Lionesses are leaders of the hunt, and know about attack formations and the weak spots of their prey. The Druids know many of nature's secrets, but they let it guide them unlike the Elves. And finally the Sages, who carry the knowledge of the outside. The limit of a Sage's knowledge is unknown, even by other Sages.

The Units:
[spoiler=The huntress line:
The huntress is the main fighter of the Catkin. They have sharp claws and can deliver lightening quick pounces that can easily crush bone. As a huntress becomes experienced in the hunt they typically become Pack Leaders, but some have been known to become solitary hunters of great skill.]Lv 1 Huntress

When times of hostility occur, a Nature Cat must choose to use their knowledge to guide their people or protect them.]Lv 1 Nature Cat

While most of the Catkin have little to no contact with the outside world, the Scholar's one true goal in life is to learn as much as they can about it. Scholars teach their people in the midst of battle so they learn quicker how to overcome their foes. Scholars also make a great tea.]Lv 1 Scolar

battle tutor never was really good. what if you change it to around 4 extra xp per kill and 1 extra xp per fight?

i don't really like the feel of the faction: most cats are fast and sneaky, but you have them as kind of slow (movement wise) and mostly with less attacks until higher levels. i'd make it so that the panthers have backstab and nightstalk (and maybe skirmisher) and do a bit less damage.

also, if you want to be more accurate: the lionesses in a pack of liones hunt for food, but the males are bigger and defend the pack from enemmies (like hyenas), so if you went by this the huntress line be skirmishers or scouts or thieves or something, while the males would be fighters.

Cats are fast in bursts, but over distances humans outrun them. Low move but high evade would fit perfectly.

Somehow I feel like "fisherman" should be "fishing cat."
And you can't complain about it being a silly to use animal names, because it levels up into a catfish ;)

Yes, the scholar no longer will have the Battle Tutor ability, instead offering a Protection ability.

Right now the only two male units are the scholar and fisher, so the huntress will have to stay the damage dealer. Luckily the scout unit this faction lacked has three branches, one a faster skirmisher, one a snowlands backstabber, and one a tough desert fighter.

@Skizzaltix: Yes but "Grand Fishing Cat" is not awesome.

Grand Prionailurus?

All up to you, of course. I was just a little disoriented to see a combat unit called a "fisherman" ;)
