Re: Orc Portrait Series
Aside from the awesome teefs, he doesn't actually looks that angry - more like he's yawning... More of a snarl, dropped eyebrows, narrowed eyes and a more screwed up face in general would improve this appearance, I think.
Otherwise, he looks wicked

Agreed. He needs more dramatic eyes.

Re: Orc Portrait Series
Maybe if you could see the veins in the white of his eyes?
Re: Orc Portrait Series
Yeah, it's something really, really subtle which should be quite non-invasive to fix; just a tiny bit of paintover on the face (around the eyebrows) will fix this.thespaceinvader wrote:Aside from the awesome teefs, he doesn't actually looks that angry - more like he's yawning... Re: Orc Portrait Series
I'd say he looks more in pain than angry. Still, better than before.

Re: Orc Portrait Series
Close, but not quite there. I think the problem comes from the horizontal wrinkles on his forehead, which only come about when the eyebrows are raised - when someone's screaming angrily, the eyebrows are lowered and pulled inwards, so the wrinkles should be vertical and around the nose.

I'm glad you're on the job again, Lord Bob. The orcish warlord is the only cartoon portrait left, and it will be nice to see the last of it.

Re: Orc Portrait Series
added (quickie) button designs for the orc assassin & grunt @ relicsofwesnoth; interested in feedback (was thinking of starting a topic thread for design feedback, but not sure where to put it on the forum?)
aside from my previously-stated opinions, i think they're quite good; certainly far better than anything i could have done!
as re: the above discussions of orc appearance. do we have any kind of "cannon" for what orcs are supposed to look like, in terms of physiognomy?

Re: Orc Portrait Series
The above portraits ARE canon. At least the finished ones.
Re: Orc Portrait Series
Attention Peanut Gallery - I've already deleted one post about "the way orcs should look" and I will delete any others that display shocking ignorance on the topic. Please familiarize yourself with this thread where the official orc look for Wesnoth was discussed at great length and finalized. No, we don't care if you disagree.

Re: Orc Portrait Series
I pushed the eyebrown closer to the nose and raised the skin next to nose up to the eyes. This is to demonstrate the angry eyes. Someone should redraw the face since I just used the shop's liquify-tool.

Re: Orc Portrait Series
That's looking more like it. but as you say, it's up to Bob to do the real work - he's the only one with the high-res source file, and any edits done to final scale won't look right.

Re: Orc Portrait Series
Now that is a real nasty gut wrenching snarl. That's what I like to see in orcs. Without the original it looks a bit weird. though.

Re: Orc Portrait Series
The assassin did not look pretty orc, too human. Maybe we should insist on the nose to do it less as human (as the ears, mouth, teeth are hidden).
The knives seem a little too smooth, without detail. The render of the dagger is very realistic. In comparison, the knives do not look as finished.
The light on the thighs, looks a little brush stroke, I think.
The expression of grunt : I suggest to bend over the upper lip in M. And perhaps accentuate the wrinkles on the nose. Perhaps the eyebrows most in V. Brief highlight expressions of anger. Especially on the upper lip, in my opinion.
The sword did not look very orc. Too thin, smooth, even elegant.
