Announcing the Wesnoth Summer Art Scholarship

Announcing the Wesnoth Summer Art Scholarship

Google's Summer of Code program, which started in 2005, has been a resounding success for notable open-source projects across the world, but we, as a game project, have lamented the lack of a similar project for an equally important cornerstone of our development: Artwork.

The Wesnoth project has received a nominal income through donations and ad revenue. In fact, the community has been generous enough that we are now able to use this income to establish a scholarship program; nearly identical in intent to GSoC, but targeted at art: The Wesnoth Summer Art Scholarship

Funds, and thus available slots, are limited, but we will be able to offer a few student artists a stipend for creating Wesnoth art assets during their summer break. This is both beneficial for wesnoth, and should be very educational for the students involved. Like GSoC, we have several goals:
- Get more open-source art created and released for the benefit of all
- Inspire young artists to begin participating in open source development
- Help wesnoth identify and bring in new artists and contributors
- Provide students the opportunity to do work related to their academic pursuits during the summer (i.e. artwork, not flipping burgers)
- Give students exposure to a real-world art development scenario, wherein they work on a real game, with a real team, and are expected to fulfill real job requirements.

And last but not least, we are hoping that our initiative will inspire other open-source projects to engage in similar endeavors.

If you are interested in participating in the 2009 Wesnoth Summer Art Scholarship, you can find all information required in our wiki http://www.wesnoth.org/wiki/Wesnoth_Sum ... cholarship . You should carefully read this page and follow its instructions.

Applications are open until the deadline of June 22nd, please read the wiki page for details.

The submission process for the Wesnoth Summer Art Scholarship has ended, and we have selected 2 winning candidates for our Scholarship. The winning proposals were submitted by Kathrin "kitty" Polikeit, and Phil "thespaceinvader" Barber. We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who submitted proposals; we would have loved to accommodate additional, deserving proposals if we had the means.

The creators of the winning proposals are free to commence work on their first project milestones. I will follow up with additional information as necessary.

Good luck.
