Game polishing: sound on advancement
Hi,
I'd just like to throw in an idea that came up lately and would be a good candidate to include in 1.0 (IMHO): Play a sound on unit level-up.
This would
a) be easy to accomplish (I tested it myself - just a oneliner in actions.cpp - something like sound::play_sound("$SOUNDFILE");)
b) add to overall game polish (acoustic feedback) without breaking anything, requiring rebalancing or whatnot.
I would recommend a simple "pling", or perhaps a nice triad. Just so the player gets the feeling to have something accomplished.
I'd also recommend doing this before the player selects (in case of multiple choices) to which unit he/she will advance. That would, unless I am mistaken, be at the beginning of the advance_unit method in actions.cpp - after line 01288 according to current online source.
I'd provide a patch, but such a simple change is probably not worth the trouble...
So is there a chance for this to be still included?

Unless Microsoft releases it as GPL compatible.
But maybe the starting sounds of KDE or Gnome could do...
Can somebody scan this ones (GPL ones) to find a good leveling sound?

I'm going to create a thread in Music&Sound so anwers could be posted there.

I dug some up. The first is a little short and the second is a little long. Something will come along.

I'm throwing all the GPL/Public Domain sounds that may be useful for Wesnoth, here: http://www.echostar.pl/~dolny/wes/

I think that it shouldn't be some starting theme or real world sound-effect. Perhaps it could be someone saying "level up" with a really cool voice.
