Other games

Post by Invictus »

Can you recommend any other freeware or open-source games out there. The only way for these games to survive and improve is to make the community aware.

Games I can think of offhand:
Nethack
http://www.nethack.org/
Freeciv
http://www.freeciv.org/
People's Tactics
http://www.peoplestactics.com/
Slash'em
http://www.slashem.org/
XConq
http://www.xconq.org/

Thanks

VegaStrike

-edit- Just at this point in time (how many months after I made this post?) I notice I didn't add any description. Well, here goes:

A 3D space-faring game, with planets, stations and ships to land on/dock; a huge amount of systems belonging to one of the several governments/various other groups..

And the universe is dynamic, which means that groups will field fleets to attack/defend systems and may conquer and hold them.

As usual with this type of game, one can trade, do special missions or just fight.

Some of these look interesting. I'll be sure to remember this thread if I ever get tired of Wesnoth & Programming...

Armagetron Advanced : a game like GLTron , but playable on network
http://sourceforge.net/projects/armagetronad/

Flight Gear , a flight simulator like X-plane version 6 (don't look like the 7 or the 8 for graphics) http://www.flightgear.org

That planeshift site scares me. Especially their section on licensing, and why their artwork should not be GPLed. Its just too... pompous and legalistic, I guess is what I would call it...

A good place to start is the Linux Gamers FAQ. They have a bunch of interesting links. The Linux Game Tome and LinuxGames site also have news and reviews of both free and non-free games. The Liberated Games site has lists of games that were formerly commercial, but are now free (as in beer or as in speech).

Crossfire is a very interesting crossplatform multiplayer RPG that's been around for quite a while.

Crimson Fields is a nice little TBS war game that looks like it has potential.

Another interesting RPG that seems to be coming along nicely is Attal: Lords of Doom.

Freedroid is an ambitious and entertaining little overhead shooter.

FreeDroid is really fun, but is too easy. I only die when I accidentally take over a low number, then get mowed down by an 800-something...

IIRC, I've tried Attal before, and it seemed just like a Heroes of Might and Magic clone. Nothing necessarily wrong with that (freeciv is doing fine, after all), but I already own HoMM, so I probably won't be playing Attal any time soon, especially since it is not nearly as polished.

A Scorched Earth clone for linux. Yes, I know they have the 3D scorched Earth, and it's quite good... but I like my Scorched Earth 2d and old school, yo, yo :)

Ooh, I almost forgot Enigma. It's billed as a puzzle game with rolling marbles, but it really has an amazing amount of stuff in it. It's kept me entertained for hours and hours. It truly highlights how a few simple concepts can be rearranged into a huge variety of very different games. The screen shots really do not do justice to this very interesting and compelling game.

Simutrans (http://www.simutrans.de/) is a closed source but free transportation simulator.

This game generates worlds with cities and resources; your job is to connect suppliers to customers, develop bus routes, rail networks, ferry lines, etc. etc. Oh, and avoid going broke in the process. This is probably my second or third favorite linux game (runs on Winders too).
