If the map is played with EoHS:Alternative era, it causes problems with spell picks. Side 1 starts with necromancy 6, and gets 14 spell picks.
With the regular EoHS era player one starts with 6 sorcery and 4 picks (this is normal).

btw there is a bug when you level up your mage trough spells or exp from a summon: You do not get any new spell picks.

I just waisted a lot of time simply trying to figure out how to increment a variable. Are there units in the ivory tower? Because if the game can't find the Khalid unit files, then the ivory tower will not be populated.

Most of the battles in the early game give you a bunch of loyal units to fight with - as well as AI allies. I loved this, it helps balance the game and fighting along the AI feels good.
