Re: Greetings once again

In the spirit of experimentation, here's another wose sketch, this one dispensing with the branchy bits.

This look is less like the traditional ent/treant/tree-man, possibly too much so; the "treeishness" would have to come in large part from the coloration and texturing.

Re: Greetings once again

Alright, I'll start working on some sketches, and see what comes of it.

To start with, here's a very preliminary wose. I like the pose, but the image would need to be reworked to fit in portrait dimensions, and the leafy bits need a lot more definition.

Greetings and woses

Surprise, I'm not dead! :) Let me say that I am mightily impressed by the general increase in style and graphical polish that's occurred in Wesnoth of late - after having not played since 1.2.something, 1.4.1 is quite an upgrade. My hat is off to all of you fine artists. I realize I've been vanished...

Very nice. For aquatic stuff like this, I think the water effect need not fill the portrait from edge to edge, but if that's the case it needs to extend somewhat past whatever is floating in it. When the edge of the ripples touch the edge of the body, (as in seaserpantblahblah.png), it looks odd. In...

This is so, but I'm not trying to imitate Jason Lutes' style. Normally my own stuff does as well, actually, but I'm experimenting with a lack of visible outlines for this one.

And now, the newer, less-starved version:

Thanks for your various comments. I've increased the contrast, and generally fiddled the shadows into something I think looks better. And just as I was about to upload those changes, I saw Sgt. Groovy's very correct point about the cast shadows. Uh, oops. These have been added, which hopefully makes...

Elf Portait

Another portrait attempt, this one for the elf fighter: a unit line that really deserves to have a face, given that it's one of the default speakers in the main campaign.

Anyway, I'm trying something slightly odd here: no actual outline, just shading. Does it work with the vaguely cell-shaded look?

Go back a few images. The version I currently endorse is the one with the glowing vision of a tree under his hands. The one with blank space there was provided for Jetryl's benefit.

 Fighting is hungry business.

I know the sprite has a staff, but I'm going to call artistic license on that one. He's put it down somewhere.

Sure. I'll make it a larger one, too, so you don't have to work at that tiny scale.

Also, how precisely did you do that texturing around the edge of the robe? Nothing terribly fancy. I used two muddy colors, one light, one dark. The light one was applied in random dabs of the pencil tool at about 75% opacity, the dark one atop that at about 90% opacity. Closeup below. The presence...

Saurian Augur Portrait (in progress)

Hello again, everyone. I've been out of touch with Wesnoth for a while, but I'd like to get back into the portrait game. Currently, I'm filling one out for the last unit line in the Drake faction, the augur, and I wanted to poll the forums for feedback. Criticize away! Attached is the version I'm wo...
