Re: Wesnoth Player's rating
I'd say 6.5. I do enjoy Wesnoth when I'm playing it (the last time was quite a while ago...), however it has (had?) some issues that make me lower the score. First of all, I think the notion of difficulty in campaigns is bull. Just giving the AI more gold and/or reducing turn limit on harder setting...

Re: Displaying attack info in 1.9
Throwing my two cents in, regarding tooltips I think it's bad to rely on them for basic info. First of all, how many people know that they even exist? Does the game tell you that by hoovering over perfectly normal-looking text you get extra information? Because to me personally it's rather counter-i...

Re: Good format for game data
[*]Make it human readable [*]Make it accessible through Javascript (parsing) [*]Make it dynamic so things can be added or deleted without having to recompile[/list] So, you basically want anything that's written in plain text, no? Regardless whether it's XML, YAML, WML or something else you come up...

Re: A clone of TheSettlers II 10th aniversary.
Well, at least the "gameplay grid", that is the road grid, is hexagonal in both the original Settlers 2 and the 3D remake. You can easily verify this by creating a flag on a clear area and starting to build road from it: You can build the road to six different directions from that flag, ju...

Re: A clone of TheSettlers II 10th aniversary.
Widelands isn't exactly a very faithful Settlers 2 replica, since it adds a lot of new resources, ways to produce resources and the different civilizations have different buildings and resources they use. Personally speaking, I'm a huge fan of Settlers 2 but I found Widelands pretty disappointing. :...

Re: About the format of attacks ( damage-strikes )
But if the person has absolutely no idea what the symbol means (crossed swords), he is more likely to look it up in the manual/tutorial than if it is something he thinks he understands but doesn't. The reason people don't understand the current notation is that they assume it means something it doe...

Re: About the format of attacks ( damage-strikes )
Also an other opinion from the peanut gallery: Wesnoth is, as everyone knows, played around the world by people from a lot of different cultures. Different symbols have, obviously, different meanings in different cultures. The only symbols that one could safely assume to have mostly the same meaning...

Re: Newbie's comments re. Game Manual
Now I'm wondering how one knows a unit's offensive strength when deciding which ones to recruit or recall. I don't remember seeing indications of units' damage capabilities in those displays. Here's a screenshot of the recruit screen from the first tutorial scenario: http://www.akinomori.com/stuff/...

Re: Locations of savegames and userdata
I'll admit I don't know what actually happens when in XP or Vista you agree to install a program for "all users" instead of "current user" in the installer (provided that the installer has this options): Does it add the shortcuts to just one location where everyone sees them if y...

Re: Locations of savegames and userdata
If the userdata-folder can be determined during installation, an easy solution for finding the folder would be to add a link to the userdata-folder in start menu together with other Wesnoth icons.

Re: 1940: European Theatre
Of course, the swastika isn't the only symbol that's commonly associated with WW2 German military, and there's a nice alternative without all the negative Western stigma: Yup, but not an issue, that is already present on the flags. If you look at the larger version of his screenshot, you can see th...

Re: 1940: European Theatre
...Yes, there's a reason I was feeling stupid. I guess I'm just really used to seeing it with the swastika (Not to say you should put that in--I don't know how much of an issue it could be, but better safe than sorry, right?). Not that I think Panzervb would do it, but yes, this should be avoided i...

Re: GPL, UMC & intellectual property?
Thanks for the replies so far. I'm not sure if everyone really got what I meant, so I'll try to explain a little better: GPL is targeted to be used for software for the most part, and although it can be used for pretty much anything the legal jargon about it can be a bit confusing and not all compar...

GPL, UMC & intellectual property?
First, I'm not sure if this is the best forum for this but since my question is about UMC in general, not just some small subset, this wouldn't really fit into the specific forums either. Also, this might be brought up before but I took a look around and wasn't able to find any info, so... Anyway, w...

Re: A game idea I'm toying with, but will probably never see.
So, three questions: are their any games like this, is such a game possible, and would you play it if it were made? If I had the time, money, or skill, I would give it a shot, but I doubt I'll be able to until I'm done with university, at least. I think it would be possible, it would just be a ridi...
