I'm surprised. 6 hits (42 hp) will do for even a resilient quick spearman and 6/8 hits isn't that far up the proability curve even at 50%. At 40% it's going to happen a little more again. I did have it happen to me once at 60% (but fortunately a very late turn where it didn't matter). The first two ...

The idea is NOT to make the spearmen survive for as long as possible. They are almost assuredly dead in one turn. You want to place them so that the outriders that attack them will not, after killing them, be able to catch up to you in time. They are a diversion. ;) Yes they may be dead in one turn...

So where do you place them then? I've been placing them in good terrain in a desparate attempt to keep them alive long enough to allow Alanin to get enough space to get to the next village. I'm sure it's much simpler on easy, but if this is how hard it is on medium, I hate to think what hard would b...

On further musing, 'both should survive' is a lot of verbage to see on nearly every attack. In some ways I support having this on the damage calculations page - so I can look it up in awkward cases (where both units have a chance to die). I can do it my head easily enough for simple cases. Having it...

Outrider kebab

Ok. I have a L2 Alanin and I'm getting kebabbed easily on medium diff. I think I made it to turn 5 once... Alanin is hard to level in the caves - being L3 shouldn't be a requirement to have a chance - not that I think I would even if he was. [cheats]. Ok - I could finish it, just about, if I tweaked...

2v2 charge is and always has been a perfectly fine map. There have to be some maps without strategic water/swamp.

Well an alternative is to distinguish between 0% and 0.0005% and by calling one 0% and the other 0+% o similarly 100% could be '100%' and 99.9995% could be '99+%' Then you can round to nearest for values inbetween. You could come up with english phrases which would describe those 0+ and 99+ states b...

yep - I lost the horseman (alawhatsit) before the end of the scenario, but still won when Rugnar got into the cave.

I also lost another unit with a shield and the scenario didn't end.

variant unit data.

A little testing has shown that if I move my data directory sideways and replace it with the CVS one, I can start wesnoth (ok, it rebuilds the cache in my home dir - good) and play with the CVS definitions of the units. However my version is still 0.9.2 and I have no idea what would happen if I conn...

All strategies need to be tempered with a little variety. Mages and HI vs undead works up to a point. Adepts pretty much deal with HI at night (and hold their own vs Mages) and skeletons can chop up mages. You do need to run pretty hard during the day, but that's no surprise. As a loyalist in this m...

In other games (wargames I've played - not online ones either :-) ) sometimes you get a bonus if you have units both sides of another and a big one if you have it totally surrounded. This eats into the thief backstab ability tho. What you could do, without needing to go that far, is give a small pen...

I confess I was looking at the problem from a OO programmers point of view (while I don't do C++ I've done a resonable amount of other OO programing - mainly in perl recently). The difference between a function which constructs the name of the animation image it wants from the various facts it knows...

Well that sounds like me an argument for a directory for each unit with that unit's graphics in it. Simple, effective, modular.

Yah - quick and resilient is the way to go for white mages for sure. Nice one.
